Title: Music Hall Artiste?
Post by: PENCAN on Friday 06 July 18 22:24 BST (UK)
Hello All,
On the 1901 Census,  l've come across a relative, DANIEL HALEY [son] aged 25, b. Stepney, whose profession is down as  Music Hall Artiste Act, own account. He was actually born David William Haley. [did he change his name when he became an artiste?] l've tried googling him, but no information. l would be grateful if anyone could help give me any information please. Thanks.

Have you found him later on (1911/1939) to see if he continued that profession?

You could also look for newspaper reports that might mention his performances.

Did he marry?  What name did he marry under and what occupation did he give on his marriage cert?

Many thanks for your replies, Milliepede & CaroleW.  That may be the right death, which would answer  the problems l've had looking for Daniel or David William.  l have been unable to find him on neither the 1911C or marriages. l also looked for his parents on the 1911C, just incase he had changed his name again, but was still living at home, but they're not on there either. They would have both been 70 by then, perhaps they had died. l had found on Probates, a Bartholomew Haley [David had a younger brother Bartholomew], who had lived in Narrow St, Limehouse, along with his brother David, who was his sole executor. But then realised that this Bartholomew was the wrong one, as he had died in 1889.
Milliepede, l've just spotted you suggest looking at 1939, l'll look at that. Thanks again for your help.

Hi,

There is an online tree that would appear to have the death cert for David William Haley.

Details -

Death - 3 Jan 1909, 25 Liverpool Lawn, Ramsgate

Cause of Death - Pulmonary tuberculosis

Occupation - Song writer

Alway best to err on the side of caution with other people's trees, however this one appears to be well documented.

Hello All,
Milliepede,  l've checked the 1939C and there's no David or Daniel Haley living in Stepney. Many thanks JJen for your info. As you say, always best to err, but it does look interesting.  And thanks CaroleW for your info. lt's all much appreciated.

Hello All,
Apart from that possible death of my David/Daniel in Ramsgate, l haven't found any definite information on him after the 1901C. Thinking that may not be him, and  the fact that he seems to have just disappeared, l wondered if he may have emigrated. There were a few Daniels that went to New York, one was a Daniel William. Also, one came from New York to Liverpool in 1917. l need to pay to look at those records, But another possible path to follow is WW1.

You could get the death certificate for the one in Ramsgate to see if it settles it one way or the other.

The details of the 1909 death given in reply 6 would suggest it is the correct death.  Why not contact the tree owner?
