Title: Dickson/Dixon relatives from IoM.
Post by: Pamela McBride on Saturday 23 June 18 08:08 BST (UK)
I am trying to find more information on my relative Elizabeth Dickson. Her father was Edward Dickson and her mother was Elizabeth Dixon, born 1815 at Sulby. I have the family in the 1851 IoM census but Edward is missing.
My Elizabeth had three sisters, Jane M K , Margaret and Isabella. She was born about 1847 at Douglas, and at age 18 married James Houston at Kirk Christ, Lezeyre on 03/01/1865. They moved to Belfast and had two children. I am wanting to go back in time for both the Dicksons and Dixons but are not having much luck. Any help would be appreciated Regards Denise, New Zealand

Hello
The eldest sister Jane M K Dixon is born c 1844 in England.
This looks like her at West Derby Mar 1844 Jane McKenzie Dixon mother's maiden name Cowley.
The other children are all baptised together at the Isle of Man Lezyre 15.2.1854
Margaret Eleanor born 18.10.1845
Elizabeth Catherine 23.3.1847
Isaac William 20.11.1853
parents Isaac Dixon and Elizabeth Cowley master mariner
Other sister Isabella at St Barnabus 8.8.1850.
Isaac and Elizabeth married at Braddon 6.10.1840.He was a mariner of Liverpool and she of this parish. No fathers given.
His Masters Cert gives a birth 1811 I of Man.

Her marriage certificate does give her father as Edward Dickson engineer
There is another Miss Dickerson with a father Edward Ward Dickson engineer marrying around the same time Mary Selina Beckwith Dickson in 19.6.1878 to John Alfred Dearden.
Could there be a connection there.
Edward Ward Dickson was Irish from Belfast he married Penelope Scott 30.6.1842 in Cheshire giving address as Glasgow and father Stephen .
Their children seem to be born in Scotland .I can see him in 1841 and 1861 but not 1851.
He was buried at Douglas 21.3.1878 age 61 civil engineer 14 Strathallen Cres.

Hi
Just had a look at her second marriage to Robert Mc Bride in Belfast in 10 Sep 1870.Do I have the right woman?
There she is Elizabeth Houston widow alias Graham 22 d of Samuel Graham ship builder
Robert McBride 23 bach labourer Belfast s of John Mc Bride labourer

What is going on? Is it the right woman?
Daughter Susan Houston's birth cert does give Elizabeth as Dickson.

Hi everyone, I’ve just come across this chat regarding Elizabeth Dickson, she is my 2 x great grandmother, married James Houston (he was actually James McIndoe his mother married my 3 x great grandfather William Houston and he is stated as stepson on Scottish 1851 census) He was illegitimate.

She is a bit of a mystery, as you say her father on her 1st marriage certificate is Edward Dickson, engineer then on her 2nd marriage to Robert McBride she has an alias of Graham. What that is all about I still have not not to the bottom of yet.  I am  leaning towards the Edward Ward Dickson engineer as her father but if anyone else can find real proof of her birth etc I would also be very grateful.

Unfortunately I cannot find a birth registration for James McIndoe/Houston so I’m stuck on him also!
