I have found a reference to James Measday for the 1891 census living in London, occupation "washman", age 31, but cannot find any mention of him on FindMyPast or A. I have entered his name with variations but with no luck so I am assuming that his surname has been mis-transcribed.
1861 - Undertree, Wickhambreux, Kent
Age 7 months living with his parents Charles and Ann
1871 - Undertree, Wickhambreux, Kent
Age 10 living with his parents
1881 - Cannot find him
1891 - ??
1901 - 29 Marlborough Road, Chelsea
Age 38 Coachman Domestic b. Wickham, Kent, living with his wife Alice age 39
1911 - 9 Blithfield St W, Kensington
Age 40 Coachman b. Wickham, Kent, living with his wife Alice L age 46
They did not marry until 1924.

Have you found Alice in 1881 :-\
-
Thank you rosie99. I had tried so many variations both with the surname and age, it does pay for another pair of eyes!!
-
Alice, in 1881, was living at 34 Bormore Road, Kensington, with her son Joseph.
-
Apologies again, Alice's surname was Russell and Joseph's age is given as under 3 months (he was illegitimate).
I have found a Joseph F Walters living with a John and Sarah Sulman, School Lane, Wilburton, Ely, Cambs in the 1891 census - he is listed as a nurse child. At the moment I have gone on the fact that as Alice was living at the same address as a Joseph and Louisa Waters, then he possibly was the father.
-
Joseph & Louisa had not been married long (1877) He could always have been a result of a liason with a sibling of Joseph, would Louisa really have had him living with them if he was a son of Joseph's conceived after their marriage :-\ What happened to Joseph & Louisa after 1881.
I still can't see James in 1881 :'(
