Hello,
Does anyone know anything about this company please?
We have a gate made by this company at our house and I traced a previous owner in 1911 who was a retired blacksmith and am wondering if there is a connection between the two. Our house is one of four and the other three have the same gates as each other. Thank you in advance 😊

Hi
Thank you for replying, unfortunately not. My chap is George Llewelyn, 1911 in Minehead, retired blacksmith. And the gate made by W A Baker & co ltd Newport

:) OK but what has a gate made by W A Baker got to do with a George Llewelyn, maybe W A Baker employed him?

Well I wondered if there was a connection due to his job and the fact the gate was different to those in the same row of houses. Maybe he had worked at the company who made the gate

Hi again, when was the house built, as to have an Ironmonger etc with that CV seems to suggest he was an important man/employer in Newport c 1901?

Hi viewing the last post, in 1881 census William A Baker aged 34 b Devon with wife Alice & Family, is an Ironmonger & Ironfounder employing 27 Men & Boys in Newport
Census ref RG11/5261/110/1

EDIT George Llewellyn was a Retired Farmer & Blacksmith at the Minehead address in 1911, in 1939 it was a Lodging House.
W A Baker & Co Engineering & Foundry was established 1880 at Westgate Works, Newport, one of its claims to fame is that it made a Swing Bridge to cross the Bute Canal, Whitehead Iron & Steel aquired a controlling interest in 1938.

Thank you for the info, I wonder where George Llewelyn was in 1901, whether he was in Newport and what his job was
-
He was in Herefordshire with the family shown on 1911, he had nothing to do with William Alfred Baker he just lived in a house that had gates made by W A Baker Newport

PS have you looked up what an Iron Founder does, no need for a Blacksmith it would seem?

Oh that’s that then!! Thank you for helping me

:) No problem, it was a fascinating search!
