Title: Margaret Somerville(1746-1823).
Post by: SSlh on Saturday 09 June 18 14:56 BST (UK)
I am trying to go back from Mary Somerville ( 1746-1823) from Carstairs, Lanarkshire. She was married to Robert Tweedie ( 1737-1823). Is Scotland's People the best site to do this?
Many thanks for any help given.

Lyn,

Yes I would use Scotland's People, it is home of the original OPR's.

I did take a peek and see there is a Margaret who married a Robert Tweedie in 17 Jul 1768 but no Mary.

And, although it states that both Margaret and Robert were of this Parish it doesn't mean they were born there.

However, if this Margaret was from the Parish and baptised then this is the only one on record.

SOMMERVELL MARGARET    ANDREW SOMMERVELL/ 20/02/1732 (no mother identified)

Or, if this Margaret was baptised a Mary then the following the only one who would fit.

SOMERVEL MARY  JOHN SOMERVEL/JANET MEIKLE 11/08/1750

Thank you so much Don. I made a mistake and the name should have read Margaret! I have a family letter written by Christina Tweedie, my 3x great grandmother who mentions that her grandmother's family all came from the Carnswath, Corsairs region of Scotland. She mentions the name Agnes Muir. There was an Angus Muir married to another James Somerville, but I don't want to presume anything and say I have found the connection without finding records and then double checking.
I'll keep on searching! The Hamilton name was also handed down as a middle name.So I wonder what that connection might be.
Thanks again for your information.

Lyn,
have a look at www.familysearch.org  under Family Tree, you will find Margaret and Robert had 10 children, well worth researching.
Cheers

I can't thank you enough lud...... a huge discovery for me! Moved me forwards a lot. How reliable is the Family Search.org documentation? Looking at them it seems to be well covered for fact and I can't imagine what I could do to be more assured that the results are probably correct.
Again my gratitude to you for a great suggestion.
Cheers for now.

FamilySearch has no original documents. It has a wonderful index but you need to check originals at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk

Thank you for that, but it seems that trying to find William Somerville from Carnwath ( 1683 ) might not happen as it seems to be too early for records there. Is that correct or do we need to buy credits to find those earlier records? Not sure which way to go from here.

Robert Tweedie & Margaret Somerville (Variants on SP) married 1768

Children (recorded)

Marion 1770
Katharine 1773
David 1775
Katharine 1777 (very possible the 1st Katharine died)?
Gap i.e. room for a few more?
James 1781
William 1791
John 1795

If the Scottish naming pattern was used then Margaret’s mother should be Marion/Margaret & Robert’s father should be David, mother Katharine?

You may benefit from the original images if Sponsors are recorded but each Parish had their own way of doing things i.e. no guarantee of what's on a Baptism record. I've seen some which list their genealogy with father, g/father & g g/father named!

All records on SP are indexed & free to view but to view the original docs. you need to buy credits at very low cost.

An example Marriage from SP Index;

SOMERVAILE WILLIAM - MARGARET CHRYSTIE /FR405
29/06/1680
722/20 404
Tranent

Cost to view original image (6 credits) = £1.50 BP

Credits come in batches of 30 = £7.50 which would buy 5 original docs. which is less than the cost of 1 doc elsewhere!
