Hi, Is anyone visiting the Shropshire Archives Office and able to do some staff record looks ups on the Shelton Asylum for me.
The records I am after are for my Great grandfather who would have started working there some time between 1871 and 1881. His name was Richard SIMMONDS and I am particularly interested in when he started as well as any other details available. He had retired by 1911. he started as an "attendant on the insane" and finished as Superindentant.
I know that they ask for prior notice for these requests but as he is over 100 years ago access should be permitted.
I am also interested in any records for his children working there- most of them (boys and girls) went on to work as nurses at some stage of their lives. The oldest Margaret Kate was born in 1882 and was working as a nurse at Shelton in 1911 (she was elsewhere in 1901). Other children who may have worked there were Fanny Mabel, gertrude May, Winifred Mary, Mildred Sarah and Dorothy Alma, less likely were Henry Burton (oldest son b 1883), Richard Gordon, John Knight and Joseph William Gilbert (youngest child b 1900).
Any information gladly received- do the archives allow photography of records? I realise that the asylum records are sensitive but this is about staff not patients.
Many thanks
Jane

Have you confirmed that the archive holds these records.
Is there a catalogue number/reference so that anyone visiting knows where to look ;)

Admin History
In 1911 the agreement with Montgomery was dissolved and the asylum returned to being the Asylum for Shropshire and the Borough of Wenlock alone"
It looks like it is ALL the surviving staff records right up to modern times. My ggf was not working there in 1871 but he was by 1881, he had retired by 1911, he died in 1919.
His daughter Margaret Kate was working there in 1911. Other children may also have worked there but not in the census years.
Cheers
