Title: Gibsons of Dumfries
Post by: BillytheCod on Monday 04 June 18 00:44 BST (UK)
A friend has requested assistance with a brickwall in her tree.  James Gibson was born in Applegarth, Dumfries in 1774.  She is looking for his parents (her 4x ggfather).  I have searched Findmypast, Familysearch,  The Genealogist and Scotlandspeople but each one only gives the father as "gibson" and no details of the mother.  Can anyone suggest a way forward please?

Hi

It's an inexact science - but can be very helpful especially with Scottish genealogy......Naming Pattern of children:

What is his date of marriage and to whom?
What are the names and birth order (years) of his children?
What are the names of his wife's parents?

Cheers
AMBLY

Hi

My contact lives in Canada (descendant of James Gibson who emigrated from Scotland to Canada in 1815) so not sure of his wife's parentage but

James (b 1774 Applegarth), married Helen Little b 1780, in Applegarth on 12 July 1801

Children in order
Annie b 1803 Applegarth
Jean b 1807 Applegarth
James b 1809 Canonbie
John b 1811 Applegarth
George b 1813 Applegarth
Ann b 1814 Applegarth

They emigrated in 1815 to Canada then William was born in 1820 in Ontario

Hope that's enough information for you.

I believe that James Gibson's parents were Peter Gibson (born ~ 1750) and Maria (last name unknown).  If this helps, great ... seeking additional information myself.  James Gibson is my Great (x5) Grandfather.

One way is to find a death certificate of a sibling who has lived until 1855. His or her death certificate would have the same details as the ancestor you are  looking at.
