Title: Charles Matthews - Crimea?
Post by: Doggy on Friday 01 June 18 10:02 BST (UK)
Hi

I am searching for a Charles Matthews and the only definite record I have of him is the 1851 census.  It shows him born about 1819 and living in Sawston, Cambs.  His occupation states he is a sergeant in the 21st? Regiment.  I cannot see him in 1841 or in 1861 so I guess he was on duty somewhere or died in service.  I've done some simple searches on Ancestry etc and there are a few candidates but I cannot be sure or match up the 21st Regiment issue.
If anyone can assist I would be most grateful.

Cheers

Are you sure it's the 21st. & not the 20th.
The 21st. was a Scottish Regt. The 20th. was raised in Devon.
However both were in the Crimea.

I read it as 20th Foot.

There is Sgt. Charles MATTHEWS of the 20th. Foot from Cambridge listed in the Pension Records in 1861.

You might need to explain that a little more to this ignoramus.  Does that mean he died in service and the pension is paid to a dependant or maybe he was wounded etc?  Any clues?

You don’t get a pension if you are dead ;D ;D

The first date is when he was pensioned as an out pensioner, the term for men who were not admitted as an in In Pensioner to Chelsea Hospital.

The second date is when payment started.

A previous post http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=101673.0 gives a few links which could be useful.

From a very quick search it seems that the regiment was in Bermuda 1841-47 and at the battles of Inkerman and The Alma during the Crimean War.

Jebber - don't spoil my dream!  I had an image of ghosts lining up outside the Post Office to collect pensions.  ;D ;D
