Title: Query re relationship
Post by: Betty S on Wednesday 16 May 18 07:50 BST (UK)
I am trying to work out a relationship in my Family tree......according to ancestry the person I am looking at is" the wife of the husband of the sister in law of the uncle of the wife of the uncle"

It  keeps going round and round in my head and cannot make sense of it........is there some kind, clever,  person out there who can help????????

is "Uncle" meant to be the same person?  Because if so it makes no sense.
Lets call them
wife = Jane
Husband = John
Sister in law = Betty
Brother = Peter
Uncle (brother of Peter) = Frank

Step 1.
Wife of the Husband of the Sister in Law =   Husband here had 2 wives 1 named wife and 1 named Sister -in law
so Jane married John who was previously or later married to Betty

Step 2.
Sister in law was married to Brother of Uncle
so Betty was married either before or after to Peter

Step 3
Frank,  Peter's brother , was the uncle of his own wife!

Well thats how I see it. Personally I would just say no relation!

Thanks for your quick reply.......I agree....on the Ancestry FT, it will say " no direct relationship"  and I just happened to notice this other message and I wanted to see if we were connected to this family.

But thanks for your help. I think I will just claim there MIGHT be a connection, but not an actual relationship......

.... according to ancestry the person I am looking at is" the wife of the husband of the sister in law of the uncle of the wife of the uncle" ....

I think there's seven people there....

So I think the person you are looking at is a female (the wife of) and she is a married person (wife ) so there's TWO people there ...

THEN reading the sentence from the end to the beginning.

.. so two more people ... wife of the uncle
... two more people  .... sister in law of the uncle of the wife of the uncle
... one more  person ... husband of the sister in law of the uncle of the wife of the uncle
Seven people  :)

I cannot see that the person you are looking at is related to you.

a husband's sister in law can be his wife's sister, or the his own brother's wife.

an ex-sister in law would suggest a divorce.

 ;D

ADD, it is the husband of the sister in law of the uncle ....  :)

Thanks for your replies, majm......is it a funny way of saying that there might be a connection? anyway it can't be a close connection!
Every time I look at the sentence I groan!!!!
So thanks again for your humorous remarks!!!!

 :)  glad you understood my musings :)  Ancestry can have some non-explainable ways of describing non-existing relationships.   ::)
