Title: R Martyr Armour True.(yes a name!,my 6th great grandmother).
Post by: gracol on Friday 11 May 18 15:25 BST (UK)
White Notley registers, very clearly written,Baptism Feb 18 1711-R Martyr Armour True daughter of R Martyr Armour True Beerman. The mother married an Edward Beerman but I cannot find the record.
Their 1st child b 1708 Edward is in White Notley registers-son of Edward Bearman and True his wife.
2nd Child b 1709,Elizabeth,again White Notley-of Edward Beerman and R Martyr Armour True his wife.
3rd Child b 1711 similarly described.
4th Child b 1713,Susannah,in Writtle-of Edward and True Beerman.
5th Child b 1715,William,in Writtle-of Edward and Armour Honour? Beerman.
6 Further children baptised in Writtle-described as of Edward and True Bearman.
The mother was buried in Writtle-the record being Aremart True Beerman.
The daughter baptised in 1711 married Joseph Green in Writtle in 1730 the register-Joseph Green and True Beerman.
I do wonder if the name really  was "Amata (latin for beloved, loved one, seems to have been used as a name) Honour True?
Seems to have puzzled the Clergymen.
True was presumably the surname although usually they  both seemed to have used True as a forename--True Green,True Bearman.
Would greatly appreciate any thoughts on this, also the marriage of Edward and True presumably around 1707.
I had hoped to find Joseph Green's baptism, maybe around 1705 in either the Writtle or West Hanningfield registers, but no success.
Have also ,not surprisingly, drawn a blank with the earlier Trues.

Reading through, it looks to me as if True is used as a Christian name, not a surname.

The surname surely is Beerman.

Thanks lizdb.
You are right of course.
So what was her maiden name before she married Edward Bearman.Cannot find any marriage of an Edward Beerman around that time.
Thanks again.

How old was Aremart True Beerman when she was buried in 1740?

On the burial record there is no age given.
If Edward was the first child, baptised 1708,married perhaps a year before, maybe born about 1685.

Could Martyr be  Martha or Marta and whoever wrote it down had no idea of how to spell it?

Hello Emeltom,
Did wonder if it could be those names, but different clergy different places didn't record them.Just written down from the way it was heard I suppose, including Aremart when buried.
As  mentioned in first post,William's baptism in 1715 the record seems to read "Honour" (Armour?),would be interested to hear from anyone with access to Writtle registers.

Ihave been fascinated by this person's name for a long time now. I think the name comes from Armaita goddess of Truth later incorporated into the church as Armaita angel of truth.I have Bover and Bearman in Writtle and Woodham Ferrers. My paper trail in the area goes back to Edward Bover and Catherine Bearman as parents of John Bover baptised in Woodham Ferrers in 1830. I have just found DNA connections with descendants of Charles Bover and Elizabeth Groves married in Writtle in 1805. This connects my Bovers to True Bover and the two sets of Edward Bover and Hannah Green in Writtle and thus back to all the variations of the name Armaita.I can't get onto the pc at the moment with all the name variations.....

Thanks very much JeanetteM for your very detailed reply.
Very interesting your interpretation of the name.
Will now study in depth all the information.
Thank you again.
Colin.

Hi Colin. I don't know where I found it originally but ...

Hello Jeanette,
Delightful derivation.
Searching Ancestry etc, there are quite a few records of "Amata" around that period (including one in Essex in 1722 in Belchamp Otten).
Williams baptism 1714/15 in the Writtle registers looks to me very like "Honour".
Do you think it likely that " R Martyr Armour True" was in fact "Amata Honour True"?
Colin

Hi Colin. You may well be right. The person writing in the parish records wrote their own interpretation of the name. My guess is they were going for Armaita amour (love) true (truth). My grandmothers were sisters Cath and Clara Bover born in Woodham Ferrers in 1905 and 1906. Their grandfather John Bover was baptised in Woodham Ferrers in 1830 parents Edward Bover and Catherine Bearman. There is no satisfactory paper trail linking this Edward Bover to the Writtle Bovers but I now have DNA links with two descendants of Charles Bover and Elizabeth Groves who married in Writtle in 1804. I have this Charles as a great grandson of R Martye. If my Gx3 grandfather Edward Bover was a son of Charles by his second wife Sarah Pryor or the son of one of Charles' brothers or sisters (illegitimate) that would make R Martye my 7th great grandmother.

Of course the big problem is trying to work out who R Martye's parents were. How was her baptism  recorded? Why can't we find a marriage of Edward Bearman with someone who could be R martye? There are not so many spelling variations for Bearman. It should be easier searching for the marriage this way. But no luck so far.

With no basis whatsoever I assume, for want of a better expression, they were "ordinary folk".
So do wonder why such unusual "classical" names were used?
It does seem logical that her mother would be similarly named?

An Edward BEEMAN married Marth FECHER in Bocking in 1711 (Boyds) but since the first child we are interested in was born in White Notley in 1707 this looks unlikely. An Edward BEERMAN aged 12 son of Thomas was baptised 29 Apr 1696 in Bocking (SEAX).

Hi everyone!
My name is Rebecca Green and True Beerman(/Bearman) is my Great Great Great Great Great Great Grandmother on my Dad's side.
I have been doing my family tree for the Greens (so True's husband Joseph), but we are all fascinated by the "Royal Martyr Armour" that appears in both True and her mother's names? Does this have any meaning? Is it a title of sorts?
I'd love to see any information you might have.
Thanks!
