Post by: MacGrigor on Wednesday 02 May 18 15:51 BST (UK)
Hello,

Can anyone find me burials for:

Esther Willis, died 1870, probably Shalford
James Graves, died 1864, probably Radwinter
Mary Graves, died 1873, probably Radwinter
Samuel Thake, died 1865, probably Radwinter
Jane Thake, died 1872, probably Ashdon

I'd appreciate any information!

Adam

Mary Graves, died 1873, probably Radwinter
BT's for Radwinter only go to 1866 (with gaps), so this will require a parish register look up.

Looking for one final one, which is James Willis, died 1867, Shalford.

June quarter, Braintree district, age 66.
Not coming up on FreeReg, which has Shalford.
And the BT shows three burials April-June 1867, and no James Willis

National Burial Index has the burial of Mary Graves in Radwinter, presumably with date. If we can get hold of it! It doesn't have James Willis though....

Shame. The find a grave page didn't give an exact date, but said some time around February 1873.

The James Willis who died in 1867 age 66 was "late of the Swan Inn, Braintree" (Essex Herald). Does that sound like the right man?

Hmm maybe not, as the family were living in Shalford. I'll check my saved records.

He was a widow and still alive in 1871. I obviously didn't find this record when I looked before! Sorry.

Died 1891, at the ripe old age of 86. That should be him.

Just found a couple more:

William Halls, died 1853, Radwinter
Judith Halls, died 1855, Radwinter
Mary Baines, died 1851, Radwinter

And a baptism for William Halls, c. 1785, Radwinter, as well as a marriage to his wife, Judith. She was from Wimbish, if memory serves. They baptised my ancestor in Wimbish in 1818.

Mary Baines death registered June quarter 1851, Saffron Walden. Can't see her in Radwinter. NBI suggests  that she was buried in Saffron Walden age 64?

Can't help with William Halls in Radwinter. No marriage has been found to Judith. Age on burial would make Judith born around 1776/7
There's a Judith Porter baptized in Wimbish, 22 June 1777. Father Samuel. Mother Elizabeth (but has she been crossed out for something else??)
And a baptism on 1 Sep 1776, in Wimbish, Judith daughter of William + Susan, but her name has been crossed through and replaced above with Mary! Surname - I'm not sure if there is one! Weird. Says of Radwinter.
It's possible that one of those Judiths may later have become the wife of William Halls!

A John Halls of that sort of age is around in Radwinter in the census. Here he is in 1851
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:SGVH-V8Q

Has his cousin with him, William Halls, 24, born Radwinter. Is he the chap in Radwinter in 1841, in the houshehold of Abraham Halls, age 60? William, son of Abraham + Rebecca Halls was baptized 29 February 1824, Radwinter (so slightly older than the 1851 cousins age, which could have been a bit out of course)

Hi
There's a website with transcriptions for Radwinter!
Has a baptism of William Halls (or Horls), son of William and Martha, I think it's 24 Sep 1784
The same couple had a son Abraham, bap 10 November 1782

This is from an old handwritten transcript (for 1638 to 1812) by Robert Hollingworth Browne that you can browse from here. I would download it.
http://www.radwinterhistory.org.uk/radwinter/brownestranscript.html

I think William and Martha married in 1778, which you can find around image 135

And it has the William and Judith marriage!
9 Dec 1804
William Halls + Judith Portway

So that baptism in Wimbish in 1777 of Judith Porter looks promising.

More Radwinter transcriptions here for later years, 1813 to 1958
http://www.radwinterhistory.org.uk/radwinter/radwinterlocalhistorycontents.html

Fantastic stuff! Good luck.
John

Hello MacGrigor
I see you have the BASS name in your research list. My BASS family was from Essex. Could you elaborate on your BASS names please?

Hello,

Unfortunately my Bass family was not from Essex but from Bedfordshire. It goes back to Burt Bass, born 1732 in Wootton.
