I am trying locate any useful information about Henry Miles my GGGrandfather according to a 1881 census he was born in 1846 in Stanton Wiltshire. As I am not very familiar with Wiltshire I am wondering which Stanton it is likely to be. For some reason this ancestor is proving most elusive in my searches. Any pointers and help would be very gratefully received. I don’t know his father’s name as yet he moved to South Wales Glamorganshire/Monmouthshire.

Hi Vik
Please can you give full details of the 1881 census entry you have found, to give us a starting point?
-
Hi
It could be Stanton Fitzwarren which is near Swindon Wilts.
Do you only have him on the 1881 census? As he married his fathers name should be on the certificate.

Now found the census: 1881 Wales RG11/5463/71/36.
So when and where did he marry Mary?
-
Or possibly?

Well there seems to be several Stantons in Wiltshire, that's what's causing the confusion. I went through the pages of the 1851 Census for Stanton St Quinton and there are a shedload of Miles families there, but I missed seeing Henry's name.
Now that someone (avm 228) on this forum has kindly found for me the maiden name of Henry's wife Mary hopefully I can get hold of the marriage certificate and get his father's name..
Woohoo progress. Another name to research.
Thanks a million

Henry had apparently died by the time his son William married:
Marriage: Rhymney Parish Church, 31 August 1899
William Henry Miles 26 Collier. Father: Henry Miles (deceased), blocklayer
Annie Lewis 25 spinster. Father: David Lewis, overman.
Witnesses: William Davies; Mary Edith Lewis.

Thanks for finding the birth registrations for Henry and Mary Miles children. I had seen Williams entry of marriage with the note that Henry was deceased this would have been some time between Emma's birth and Williams marriage.
I have been searching and so far have not found Henry Miles marriage to Mary Mathews or Matthews. Neither have I found Henry’s birth. I am erring on the side of Stanton St Quinton as a village where he was born. Someone has shown up on my DNA contacts as a very distant Miles relative with Miles from Stanton St Quinton, though Henry is not on his tree.
A big positive has been accessing the Mathews side of the family and another surname Meredith. thanks for your input.

Its is possible that Henry/Mary never married. Or she was a Widow, maiden name Mathews/Matthews.
-
Thank you for your reply. I have thought about that, I think it is probably unlikely as women had zero security if unwed and not many rights if they were at that time. I doubt somehow that she would have five children, but nothing would surprise me.

Can the family be found after the 1881 census - with or without Henry :-\
-
I cant find them after 1881 Census ::)
-
I have only followed William and Mary both of whom lived in Pontlottyn, Glam or Rhymney, Monmouthshire respectively. They both show up on the 1891 and 1901 1911 census. I have not found the marriage of Sarah Ann R Miles known as Annie to the family nor Emma (something tells me that Emma may have died young). So far I have not found Mary Miles nee Mathews in 1891 census.
I am sure gradually the pieces will come together. Its a bit like a jigsaw.

Am stumped with where they all are ??? I wonder if Mary died too and the children were scattered.
You say you have found William - is that after he married?
-
Yes it is before and after William was married. It's easier tracing the men, except for Henry. I guess after Henry died the children were given the heave ho and told to go out and get work, but none stayed with Mary which may mean that she also died. The mind boggles. ???
