Hello, I have a question that I have not been able to find a answer for anywhere. I am trying to physically locate a relative on the 1891 census of Montreal. I have the District, subdistrict, enumerator's name and notes. What I would like to know if there is anyway of translating that information into a geographic location. I know the city was divided into Wards, but the Wards are not corresponding to any lists I can find on Libraries and Archives Canada. Thanks for any insight.

Not sure if this is any good to you.

Have you cross-checked with the online Montreal directories of that time:

Thank you, Sandra, I've seen that page. The district is 172 (Montreal-Est), but the subdistrict is 62, and not a letter as in that list; I suppose I'll have to get ahold of the microfilm to figure that out.
And thank you, eileenwilson, I was not aware of that resource so I will try that as well.
I wish they listed addresses of the censuses and not just numbered the houses in the order they visited them!

There was another schedule to the 1891 Census that listed addresses but it has not survived.
-
Thank you, eileen, but you'd think that surely there was a way finding out even the general area. I'm at a loss.

Tell me who you are looking for, and I'll see if I can help.

Thank you, eileen. I'm following up on an issue I had previously on these boards. My gggrandmother, Rosanna Lovely or Leveley, was resident in some kind of religious community in Montreal in 1891. I don't know if it was a convent, a hospital, a prison, a workhouse, or what. I know that nuns were in charge of all four in those days. She appears as "lodger"; there seem to be 158 residents and she shows up on the fifth page.
Here below is the first page, which enumerates, I suppose, the mother superior and the head nuns. Beyond that, I am lost. I am going to Montreal this summer and want to be able to at least identify the place she lived. She died in 1896, I have her death record, and I would like to find out where she might be buried.

The transcription indicates it is in St. Louis Ward. Here's an 1890 Map of that ward which indicates there was a Mount St. Louis Institute and Convent on Sherbrooke Street (Soeurs du Bons Pasteurs)

The name Rossi is on pages preceding those of the convent and he shows up living on St. Lawrence Street in the Montreal directory which was also part of this ward, as does Thomas Akers.

Thank you, eileen. I checked out the map (very interesting!). What I think is this: Soeur Cadotte (the first name on the page I posted) was the head of the Sisters of the Good Shepherd, who ran several "good works" in Montreal. Roseanne undoubtedly resided in one of them, and now I need to find out which one. Thanks again.

I suspect it's the one that I identified based on other households enumerated before and after the convent and matching it up against the city directories.

She must have been one of the penitents, fallen women. She gave birth to a couple of illegitimate children before she died. Thanks for your help.

I've spent all day on this, as I often do. ::)
I decided to got back 10 years in the St-Louis Ward. Many of the nuns are the same, but there are far fewer residents and they all have the first name of "Madeleine", which means they were sinners atoning for their sins, so I can assume my gggrandmother was as well. It makes me very sad.

There is an email addy in this link to Basilique Notre-Dame where the burial service for Roseanne was conducted, if I remember correctly. They should be able to hopefully tell you where someone would have been buried in 1896.

Thank you, polarbear, I will gave that a try. I already have a message out to Notre Dame Des Neiges cemetery, as I believe that is where she will have been buried.
