My father was James Daniel Davies born in 1930. His father was Elijah Davies born in 1899 and married Janet Fawcett MacArthur in 1928. Does anyone know of that family.

Hi and welcome to Rootschat
On the 1928 marriage entry Janet has no middle name. Have you downloaded a copy of the marriage cert from Scotland’s People to establish their respective parents names as there are lots of Janet MacArthur births

The Davies family from Kirknewton was my Mum's side of the family. They had two Confectionery and Fruit shops in Broxburn. My Mum's Grandfather was Elijah Davies born 1853 Kidderminster. He came to work as a shale miner in the Broxburn/Kirknewton area. Elijah had a son Frederick Davies who ran the above shops. He ran these shops for so long before handing one of them over to his son, Frederick Elijah Davies. Frederick Elijah Davies was born in Leith.

Thanks Kloumann for the reply. That tell's me how many children they had. And the Census records too. Also losing two children at ages 2 and 14.

Margaret McArthur, who was born 1909, West Calder, died, age 91, in Peterhead, 2000, MMN Fawcett. She married George Leitch Broadfoot, in St Giles, 1932.
William McArthur's parents were John McArthur & Emily Fosset, who were married, 1874, in Queensferry.
-
The Fawcett family all came from Queensferry & can be traced back to 1841 census, to John Fosset, age 60. The name varied that much, that it was difficult to find them. Foset, Fosset, Fossett, Fawcett, Flawcett. By 1911, there were still 2 families of Fawcett's in Queensferry.

You are doing well in finding them Kloumann. It is a pity that Maisie who posted the original query in 2018 hasn't been back on. As she would certainly have been related to my Mum's Davies line.

My grandmother is the Janet Fawcett mentioned in an earlier post born in 1901. Her mother was the Janet Fosset who was born in 1882 and died in 1956 and married William McArthur. My grandmother married Elijah Davies in 1928 - he died in 1945. They had 3 children James Daniel Davies (my father), his twin brother William John McArthur Davies and Janet Davies. My grandmother re-married and her name was then Janet Hamilton. She died in 1973.

Do you have a birth place of where Janet Davies was born and a birth year for her?
William John McArthur Davies was born 1930 Blythswood and died 2015 in Galashiels. He was aged 84. He married Annie McQuade in Penicuik in 1952.
James Daniel Davies was born 1930 Blythswood and died 2015 in Inverkeithing. He was aged 85. He married Williamina Anderson Bain.
Both William and James seem to have births in both Blythswood, Glasgow and George Square, Edinburgh for 1930.

Janet Fawsett McArthur was born 1901 at West Calder. On the Glasgow Electoral Registers on Ancestry, Elijah Davies is at Lochburn Road, Maryhill, Glasgow in 1930 with Mrs Marion Davies. In 1931, he is on his own at Buchanan St, Glasgow. 1932, he is at Lochburn Road again with Mrs Marion Davies. There are other entries on the Register for him.

There is birth of a Janet Annie McArthur Davies in 1933, Lasswade. Her married name was Gillies from a 1952 marriage in Penicuik. She died 2012, age 78, in Midlothian. MMN McArthur.
-
On the 1935 & 1940 Valuation Rolls, Elijah is at 8 Fernie St, Glasgow. Nothing before that. Fernie St no longer exists but there is a Fernie Gardens just off Lochburn Rd, Maryhill.
-
Janet Annie McArthur Davies married William Paterson Gillies in 1952 in Penicuik. William was born 1928 Glencorse, Midlothian. William died aged 92 in 2020 at Edinburgh.

Marion Darling born 1884 Kirknewton. Marion died on 4th January 1941 at Kirkintilloch Road, Bishopbriggs. She was aged 57. Due to injuries sustained through being struck and knocked down by a tram car. It happened at 8.20pm near Brackenbrae Road, Bishopbriggs. Her usual residence was 38 Lochburn Road, Maryhill.
Elijah Davies, her husband, was born Kirknewton 1880. He died on 2nd January 1923 at 38 Lochburn Road, Glasgow aged 43. He was an apprentice cooper.
-
doddsie4, Do you think this might be the Elijah Davies 1899 to 1944 who married Janet McArthur Fawcett? He was residing at 1930 in Blythswood when his twin sons were born. Then I think he went to Lasswade where his daughter was born in 1933.
As that other Elijah Davies who resided at 38 Lochburn Road died in 1923.

Wilton,
I opened up the death cert and attached it to a message here but for some reason Roots always lets me down when I try to attach an image to a message. Anyway, the 1944 death was at Lasswade and a summary of it reads as follows:
Elijah Davies, 45, Hall Caretaker, married to Janet McArthur, died 10 Sep 1944 at Institute, Rosewell. Parents: James Daniel Davies, Bricklayer, Retired & Annie Finley. Informant: James Daniel Davies, father, 45 Church Street, Broxburn.
-
Thanks Doddsie4 it's okay, I have the 1928 marriage certificate for Elijah Davies and Janet McArthur. James Daniel Davies's wife would be Annie Tinley. Elijah and Janet married in the parish church in Addiewell, West Calder. I also have the 1944 death certificate for Elijah Davies at Rosewell Institute.

Elijah Davies born 6th May 1906 at 38 Lochburn Road, Glasgow. He was the child of Elijah Davies and Elizabeth Darling. Elijah 1906 married on 26th April 1935 at Cowcaddens Church, Milton, Glasgow. Elijah aged 28 resided at 38 Lochburn Road, Glasgow. The lady that he married resided at 53 Dunblane Street, Glasgow. The lady's name being Barbara Susan Ann Grant Ewing Martin.
Barbara's parents were Andrew Martin, Mason, Deceased and Jeanie Duncan Wylie.
Elijah died on 29th June 1951 at 16 Fernie Street, Maryhill, Glasgow aged 45.
Elijah 1906 and Barbara had a child called Elijah Davies born 1936 Milton, Glasgow.
Elijah 1936 married Hazel Anderson in Dumfries in 1957. Elijah died in 2014 at Dumfries aged 77.
That's about three or four generations all with the same name. Elijah Davies. No wonder it gets confusing trying to follow them around in your family tree.

Sorry I have been on for so long.
My father James Daniel and his twin brother William were born in Edinburgh. The only explanation I have for there being two birth entries is that their father Elijah was working in Glasgow at the time whilst their mother was at home.
It certainly seems as if we may be distant relatives.
Can I ask what your mother’s name was and who her parents’ were?

The explanation for there being two birth entries is always that the baby was born in a district other than that where the parents normally resided. The birth had to be registered in the district where it occurred, but if the parents' residence was elsewhere, the Registrar in the district of birth sent the details to the Registrar in the district of residence. He then entered the same information in his register, so you get a duplicate entry.
