Title: War Records for Pte. John McGillivray S/40653
Post by: Scotsquinne on Saturday 28 April 18 20:21 BST (UK)
Its been a while since I've actually searched for signing up records etc., have managed to get a copy of his medal index card, but is there a specific place I should be searching to find any other info on him?
Thank you folks.

Thanks Ady, I eventually discovered that; had thrown me off the trail for a while as the photo I had been looking at was a Cameron Uniform - so I was searching CWWG for him in that regiment, which of course he changed at some point.  I did see on FmPast web site that they had additional information, the like of he enlisted in Inverness & died of wounds - I just wondered where the source of that info had come from, and was there somewhere else that I wasnt looking?  Thanks for your reply.

The GH war diary is on Ancestry:
http://www.rootschat.com/links/01lz9/
Alternatively you can download it from TNA £3.50.
His death was in June but the action he was involved in was on 27/4/17 so at least you will know what happened.
It may (or not) show when he transferred from the CH.

His entry in the Register of Soldiers' Effects is transcribed on Ancestry as McSillivray.  This is where the died of wounds is recorded 24 April 1917.  His Gordon's number was 40653 which is I imagine how you found him on CWGC (his other number in the Camerons was 24485).  The cemetery details indicate it has the graves of many soldiers who died in one of the number of Casualty Clearing Stations in the area.  That accords with the entry "died" on the CWGC site and the Effects register.

You could now look for the war diary of 7th Battalion which may give a clue in the days before 24 April how and where he was wounded (I put may in italics deliberately). http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C7354780

It is also on Ancestry.

Just seen jim's post although I don't go along with his death in June - CWGC and Effects both say 24 April

Thank you both for that.  Yes the June death puzzled me a bit - I have it as 24/4/1917.  Shall have a look at the links.
Cheers

Had another look & it appears that 6-17 appears next to others on the page.
The way I read it gave the impression he died of wounds on that date.
Happy to be corrected.
Their diary says they were at Arras.

Thanks Jim - just had a look, think its into the next column for date payment made; can see how confusion could be caused.
