Title: George Voce marriage 1845
Post by: DPSmith on Thursday 26 April 18 21:04 BST (UK)
Hi, I've found a marriage index for George Voce and Maria Smith who married 24 Nov 1845 in St Mary's Nottingham. Unfortunately the index doesn't give the father's names. This info would be really helpful in my research. If anybody is able to help look up this marriage and find the father's names that would be amazing!
Many thanks,
Dan

Hi Dan,

Can't help with George's father. However there is a newspaper article for the marriage of George Voce to Maria, Nottingham Review and General Advertiser for the Midland Counties 28 November 1845 George's occupation is recorded as a smith and farrier of London Road.

Maria is the third daughter of Mr C Smith of Red Lion Square.

Hi JJ,

Thanks so much for the quick reply. This confirms it is the right marriage as he’s listed as a smith in later Census records. I didn’t know he was living in London Road at the time so that really helps. That census and baptism record looks very promising for Maria. Quick work!

It’s a shame the newspaper article didn’t mention George’s father. Hopefully someone will be able to do a quick check at the archives as the records on Findmypast don’t list those details.

Thanks for taking the time out to help, I really appreciate it.

Mary Voce on the 1851 and 1861 is recorded living with the Kirkman family. She is unmarried and described as sister.

1851 -  HO107 Piece 2133 Folio 138 Page 42
1861 - RG 9 Piece 2464 Folio 67 Page 43

Pity she is called Mary and not Ann which would tie in with the above baptism for George.

Thanks Keyboard86, that looks like the right one especially as the newspaper article had him living in London Road.

I know JJ, that was the only baptism I could find too so I was wondering if his marriage certificate would be blank for father’s name or if he did actually put someone. Fingers crossed!  :)

I hadn’t found Mary so if she’s a sister to the Kirkman family that could help a lot

There is this marriage which could be of interest -

Ann Voce
Marriage - 29 Nov 1823, Cotgrave, Nottingham
Spouse - William Kirkham

Perhaps the above Ann was the mother of George who then went to live with his Aunt Mary. I understand that it's all pure speculation but a possibility. Let's hope someone can help you further with the marriage details.  :)

Hi if I recall in 1851 census Mary was born in Cotgrave, the witnesses to the marriage were Thomas Browne & John Scottom.

A later census has George living with an aunt Elizabeth who was also born in Cotgrave. It looks as though Ann was his mother, Mary and Elizabeth were his aunts. If the marriage certificate is blank for father’s name it would prove this is the right baptism.

Thanks both of you for your help.
