Hi I am trying to trace parents of Frederick mares born 1856 in Charles Devon married Ann in 1880, I cannot locate anything else about from his marriage certificate which i have apart from knowing 1 of his children was Walter (great grandad) born 1882 in charlestown devon any help would be appreciated thank you
-
What are the full details from his marriage certificate please?
-
His birthplace is given as Marwood in 1901, when he is aged 43 (Frederic Mares, mistranscibed as “Harrie” Mares in some sources).
-
1861 shows Fred Maires, 3 b Marwood, in the household of John & Mary Davey in Marwood as “wife’s son”.
RG9/1494/42/4

22 nov 1880 frederick mares age 22 farmer labourer millbrook farm(i think thats what it reads) father Charles henry mares deceased and was a stone cutter.
Ann Cater or Carter 21 reside west buckland father william Cater labourer

Harwood is 3.5 miles north of Barnstaple.
The birth of Frederick Henry Mars was registered in Barnstaple December quarter 1857. GRO Index shows no mother's maiden name, Implying she was unmarried. The names John Davey and Mary Mares appear on the same page in the Barnstaple register September quarter 1860.

ahhh it is getting more and more complicated,
This is what i have sort of come up with just trying to tie it all in
walter mares 1882 charlestown devon (grandad)
married Sarah
frederick mares 1856 charles devon (great)
married Ann
charles mar 1814
married Mary Bament 1842
William mair
married Sarah (gover) 1774

Just looking at this as your reply appeared;
2 other Bapt same Church for CHARLES/MARY Mars;
EMMA 28 Jun 1851, Father a Sawyer
JOHN 19 Oct 1845, Father a Labourer
Yes FreeBMD has a 1842 Marriage.
-
Perhaps Charles was already deceased, or estranged from Mary, when Fred came along - hence his baptism not mentioning Charles as father.
-
AVM that is what i was also thinking, any ideas where to go from here?
-
Most of this was previously covered. I can't see why you started a fresh topic when so much was already on there

Thanks PaulineJ
-
I am new to this Pauline so at the moment I do not know what i am actually doing, i am just trying to find my way around , but thank you all for your help.
-
its best to keep everything together on one query if possible to stop people looking for info you already have.
If you start a new query always add a link as PaulineJ did for you so as to not confuse things.
Look like Charles may have been given 6 mths for Larceny in 1844 (Anc)
A Tree has him dying in Wales and this Death Reg Gro Index may be him;
MARS, CHARLES, age 38****
GRO Reference: 1856 D Quarter in CARDIFF Volume 11A Page 148
-
wow trish how on earth did you find that out
-
Lots of experience ;D
GRO Index is fairly new and is on line with Mothers mn and death ages for Birth/Deaths only,
You have to register but it is free to search.
As I said a Tree had him dying Wales so I just check GRO Index and that popped up.
Off to bed for me :)
-
thank you really appreciate it
-
Poor little Emma Mare was buried 22 Aug 1851 age 4mths.
I really dont think Charles Parents were William/Sarah. I think you need that 1842 M/C.
-
Makes it more sad when its a little one. I will see if i can get a hold of charles marriage certificate can i ask where you found out about charles being in prison so maybe i can find out where he was buried
thank you
-
The Criminal Register for Charles is on Anc, all it has is he was convicted for Larceny and served 6 mths in 1844. So 12 years before he died.
