Title: Adkins Family in the 18th/19th Centuries
Post by: BlandTree on Sunday 01 April 18 14:36 BST (UK)
Coming back to this family after many years' neglect!  I have many photographs which I took at the Society of Genealogists over a decide ago of relevant pages of Dawn Stapylton-Adkins' book of the genealogy of the Adkins family.  This is a very thoroughly researched epic and mentions, several times, Pamela Keegan of Swansea who also researched the many branches of the ADKINS family in Oxfordshire, Warwickshire & Northamptonshire.  The careful research which both ladies did from original sources (in the days before online information or, even, PCs) must have led to some sort of publication.  Dawn deposited hers with the SOG, but can anyone tell me where I can find Pamela's publication?

Does Dawn's book not say where she found the information that Pamela Keegan had researched?

Perhaps Pamela didn't actually publish a book and the info was held in record offices or a family history society?

Unfortunately my visit to the SOG was several years ago and as I had a great deal to look for and limited time.  Isn't that always the way! I only photographed the pages which showed my direct ancestors and have only just revisited this research and seen Pamela's name on some pages.  Indeed my own name appears on one page!
The only clues to Pamela Keegan's contribution appear as footnotes (as shown in the attached image).

Well all that tells me is that Pamela Keegan presumably found the information that is listed below her name, but it is not clear where she found that information.  Nor is there any suggestion that she has written a book or anything of that nature.

No year mentioned by her name so no help there as to when something might have been published.

All absolutely true, which is why I am clutching at straws while searching for a needle in a haystack!

However, from the previous attachment I rather suspected that she had found the information (about stone which was quarried for the turnpike road), from the Oxford County Record Office, as she stated this source, and the several references to other sources (b9), (b12), (b13) etc. seemed to indicate that this information came from associated sources which might be a published pamphlet, dissertation or booklet similar to the one that Dawn Stapylton-Adkins produced privately and deposited a single copy with the SOG.  Perhaps I will have to go back to the SOG but as I live in North Yorkshire and have allowed my membership of the SOG to lapse, I rather hoped that someone else researching the Adkins family might know of Pamela or the whereabouts of the results of her research.

I apologise if Rootschat members feel that I have wasted their time.

Malcolm

Good heavens Malcolm, you haven't wasted anyone's time.  You had a genuine enquiry and hoped for help with it.

It is just unfortunate that there isn't enough information to work with.

As a matter of interest, do you have any idea when Pamela could have possibly done this work?

Hello again, Girl Guide

I cannot say when Pamela did the research, only when she didn’t!  Dawn refers to a tombstone in Cropredy churchyard on which part of the inscription is “illegible in 1994” but supplies the missing part which she credits to Pamela.  Assuming that Dawn was in Cropredy, researching this family in 1994, Pamela’s research must have been completed before 1994.  That’s the best that I can manage!

I had seen a recent post by bzaoral (with whom I was in contact in the 1990s but whose email address I no longer have), on Rootschat so I wondered if he would see my post and might know the answer (as I think Bruno was the person who told me about Dawn’s book), or if Pamela herself might be a Rootschat member!

Rootschat members have produced miracles for me in the past (http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=49589.0) and on a number of other occasions when I have been searching on behalf of friends, so I naturally thought of Rootschat for this near impossible task!!

I think, now, that I will use my membership of the GOONS to see if Pamela appears somewhere in there!

Thanks for your interest and advice.

Kind regards,

Malcolm

Hi there!
Sorry to jump onto your thread here -but I am a Stapylton-Adkins, related to Dawn, and am very interested in tracing my (maternal) heritage.
I know she did print the book, but I only ever saw it in the family.
Do you perhaps know of how the Stapylton came to be attached to Adkins?
Thank you very much!
Jenna

Hello & Welcome, Jenna,

I cannot answer your question immediately but I will look into it; I may know someone who will know.  In which country do you reside?  Dawn is my 4th cousin, so I must be distantly related to you!

Kind regards,

Malcolm

Hi. Is this the same Pamela Keegan? She has published a number of books on Cropredy and the area, available to view on the Cropredy  village website - http://www.cropredyvillage.info/historicalsocietypublications.htm (http://www.cropredyvillage.info/historicalsocietypublications.htm).

They list an email address for more information.

Hi Malcolm,

Thank you for such a prompt response! I live in South Africa :)

Dawn is related closely to my maternal grandfather, Denys Stapylton-Adkins. I'm not sure how exactly but I think they may be first or second cousins or something of that sort!

It's all very interesting because I know that my great-grandfather (Denys' father) actually changed his surname from Scullard to Scott in the early 1900s, and am wondering why!

We must be related somehow, Malcolm! How wonderful to 'meet' you!

Kind Regards,
Jenna
