I'm seeking assistance in establishing birth and apprenticeship records for John LEA (spellings vary).
The verifiable facts that I have state that he married in Cheadle, Cheshire, to Elizabeth Lawton in 1828. From 1829 until 1839, their children were born in Tyldesley, baptised in Leigh and the baptism records indicate that John was a Tailor.
I am fairly confident that he died in Tyldesley in 1839, the burial record states that he was 44. John is not recorded on the 1841 Census and Elizabeth remarried in 1847.
If the 1839 death is the correct John Leigh, then birth year would be around 1795.
I’ve checked Ancestry, Family Search, Find my Past, Lancashire OPC, Cheshire Parish Register Data Base, Free Reg and just about anything else I can find.
The marriage record has his parish as Cheadle.
I am trying establish his birth details and his apprenticeship details. For apprentice records, I’ve checked Ancestry which seem to be the National Archives records. Still haven’t had the chance to check the apprenticeship records on FindMyPast at the library.
There is a possible baptism in Leigh in 1795 – to Thomas and Martha (the name Martha was given to their 3rd daughter).
My thinking is that he may well have been born in Leigh (given he started working there immediately after his marriage) and then served an apprenticeship in Cheshire where he met his wife. Comments/thoughts please? I’m beginning to think I’m clutching at straws.
I have not yet been able to find an apprenticeship record online (I’m in Sydney) that could fit. Perhaps someone could point me to a source I’ve not yet found. If he served 7 years as an apprentice, that would put a record around 1803, given his marriage in 1828 and possible birth in 1795.
Or maybe after puzzling over this for years, I just accept that there is nowhere else to go. I’ve put this on the Lancashire Board but happy to be re-directed.
Thanks for your thoughts in advance.

John Leigh
Baptism Date: 6 Sep 1795
Parish: Leigh, Lancashire, England
Father's Name: Thomas Leigh
Mother's Name: Martha Leigh
Register Type: Bishops Transcripts
Reference Number: Drm 2/114a
• One possible baptism speculation based on having a daughter named Martha.
There are other similar dated baptisms in the same parish so it's a guess.
I would build the trees for speculated parents and look for similarities in names and occupation for clues if your really stuck.
