From Ancestry, "From 30 March to 2 April, you’ll be able to search millions of UK, Ireland and Commonwealth records – all completely free*. Start in Britain then head off to Australia, Canada, or wherever, and spend four full days finding long-lost family all over the Commonwealth."

So are Ancestry also adding on 4 free days to all their loyal subscribers? I guess the answer will be, "No" ::)
Rather than giving away free weekends its a pity they don't try and sort out all the problems they are having at the moment.

Maybe they could give those of us who are subscribers free DNA tests all weekend ::) :-X

This is really strange, every time I go to see my daughter in Torquay, Ancestry seem to make Commonwealth records freely available!

Thanks Martin, love a free weekend.

I only have a UK membership so will get the extra access but as I don't need it then no real extra benefit for me.
I hope that this time those getting it free won't be moaning about the problems they are having with access etc ::) :)
-
I look on it as a consolation prize for having taken out a subscription. :D We won't have to answer any look-up requests over the weekend, and we can concentrate on our own researches. ;D :-*

Good old BumbleB.
Always a positive outlook! ;)

It would be nice if they would add up all these free days and add it on to longstanding subscribers :) :)

I read this thinking good news as my sub expired at the start of March . . . however I just signed in to check the subscription rates only to find a year doesn't appear to be an option any longer, it's either per month or per 6 months, and the 6 month rate is quite an increase on the 12 month rate.
So that's annoying.
I was offered the continuous membership of a year at renewal time, had no idea it was about to change/go up a lot.

There is still a 12 month sub! Try this link

You might find family in the records but they don't usually include public member trees in these offers.

That's a pity offer only for new subscribers only :(
-
That's what I thought, but have been assured by several people who have done it that it works as long as you have let your subscription expire. Worth trying, they can only reject it. I think it ends 4th April.

Might give it a go mine expires 2 April ...knowing my luck will probably reject it ;D

I let my membership run out and immediately renewed it with that offer ;D

Isn't it wrong though that you should have to do that? Why not offer it to loyal customers anyway?

I do agree that it should be offered to loyal customers, they don't offer us any discounts unlike F M P.
They do however hound us with emails for discounts for DNA ::)

Did the same last August ;)

When I click on 'My a/c' it provides start and renewal dates, type of subscription and the renewal charge.

Hi Sandra,
The problem Rosie is having is that when clicking the link ( https://www.ancestry.co.uk/cs/offers/subscribe?dna=crossAct&o_iid=70089&o_lid=70089&o_sch=Web+Property ) provided earlier in the thread she is not going to the same page that others are.
I can think of two possibilities:-
1: the link is LOCATION specific, i.e. only works if your ISP is in England. (Don't know if that is possible) I notice Rosie's location is Scotland.
2: There is a cookie on her computer which is over-riding her browser.
Rosie have you tried using a different computer to access the link? Do you have the same result?
Otherwise I am baffled.
Regards,
Malcolm

Just a thought - Rosie, were you actually logged in to ancestry when you looked the offer up. If you log out and use the link does it take you to the £89-99 offer. Might make no difference but worth a try.

Groom, thank you so much for that link! I've been having withdrawal symptoms since Christmas as I couldn't afford the Ancestry sub - far too expensive for me now. Bless you, it's a godsend, I feel more 'me' again now I can escape to the past! ;D

Glad to have been of assistance. ;D. Don’t forget to keep checking the automatic renewal is unticked so they don’t charge you full price next year.

That is all well and good Rosie, but if I click on it. I am cancelling my sub. now and I do not want to do that. I want to make sure I am not on auto renewal, and I can find nothing for that option. As mentioned above by Groom.
-
I cancelled my subscription by doing that shortly before it was due to run out. The subscription continued to the end of my 12 month period. I got emails confirming it would stop at the renewal date (not the date I had cancelled it on)
-

They have to let it run until the end of the subscription date as you've paid for that.
-
I will keep an eye out for the Ancestry offers when my subscription ends in August. In the meantime, I will utilise the free access for the other Commonwealth records as I too only have the British subscription.
Now, which great, great uncle was it that went abroad!?! ;D
-
In case it's any consolation to those who have subscriptions, I have spent all morning looking through records for free but learned nothing that I did not know already and could not have found out from the Mormon web site or other free sites. One enters a name and is shown 30 or so possible records, most of which don't match. There appears to be no way to restrict the results by time or place or type of record, and no way to search further records for the name supplied: just take it or leave it.
It's simply a teaser to try and encourage us to take out a subscription.
I for one am not tempted.
-
Strike when the iron is hot. I shall certainly be checking up on those rellies that went abroad.
-
I have a premium membership, already checked the US records and just getting sent to the board to upgrade. So certainly not letting me view anything for free ???
Thank you Rosie and Groom, I stand corrected. Legs have been firmly slapped 8)
-
Perhaps you are not seeing US records as I think it is only access to Commonwealth records :-\
I hope you did not really think we were slapping your legs :-\
-
I feel silly. I have just taken out the annual sub at £59.99 but cannot find the auto-renew button to untick!
Please can anyone tell me where it's hidden?
Thanks! By the way, I am logged in.

-
I did not think there was an auto renew tick on Ancestry, I know there is one on FindMyPast. :-\
-
You're right Rosie - I was thinking of FindMyPast. It's a bit crafty really, they send you a reminder a month before and if you don't cancel, it auto renews. So you have to make sure you watch out for that email and cancel then or make a note of when your subs is up for renewal. They don't remind you for monthly subs!

Strike when the iron is hot. I shall certainly be checking up on those rellies that went abroad.
I'll be very surprised if you find them! You just get a random selection of records that vaguely match the name entered.
I was hoping to find people in the 1911 census, to enter the details at Lost Cousins (also free this weekend, folks!), but Ancestry won't reveal the reference numbers (folio, page, and so on) unless one subscribes.
-
I was hoping to find people in the 1911 census, to enter the details at Lost Cousins (also free this weekend, folks!), but Ancestry won't reveal the reference numbers (folio, page, and so on) unless one subscribes.
But there are no folio/page numbers for 1911.
Unlike the earlier years, for 1911 we see the original household schedules.
There is a piece number, which is given by ancestry.
They usually give the schedule number in their transcript (but not always!) If they don't, then it can be found in the top right hand corner of the schedule, or in the enumerator's summary books. Would Lost Cousins want that?
-
Glad to have been of assistance. ;D. Don’t forget to keep checking the automatic renewal is unticked so they don’t charge you full price next year.
Oh yes! They send me an email, so I unsubscribe from that.
-
Thank you, jonw65.
The schedule number is there at top right of the form, but no piece number which is also required.
As non-subscribers we see only the form, no transcript.
For the 1841 census one has to state piece, book, folio, and page.
I see something like HO107/577.18, which I assume is just piece and book.
Page number is on the page, of course, but where is the folio number?
-
Thanks Rosie and Groom
That's not very good, but at least I don't feel daft not being able to find the button!
Melbell

Are you able to click the second button down on the right hand side (looks like a bar with an arrow to the left), one of the buttons to the right of the next page button? If you can, select source and the piece number is on there.
-
But you can still see the transcriptions on ancestry! If you click on "View Record"

I find the free weekends very useful. Otherwise I have to go to my local library to use the free Library editions which have most of the information. I will subscribe only if i need to.

The problem is SilverGrowler, surely if everyone did that Ancestry would soon collapse, they rely on subscribers to stay in business.

I see what I was doing wrong: I was going in via "Free Access" at the top of the screen.
Nobody told me I should just pretend to be a subscriber.
Now I get the reference numbers: thanks!
Not sure about smudwhisk's buttons, but perhaps I don't need them now.
-
Not sure about smudwhisk's buttons, but perhaps I don't need them now.
See attached two images. The first shows the suggestions buttons as they appear normally (the one you want is the 2nd one down, they are "white" on grey). The second one shows when open and source selected, the appropriate button appears green as expanded.
Ignore where it says "1900 US Census", that's the usual Ancestry anomaly showing the wrong data set, you can see its the 1911 Census.
-
Thanks, smudwhisk, but it doesn't look anything like that on my screen.
I get just + and - buttons, and above them arrows for navigating (though I can also click and drag the image).
In the meantime, by not being so naive as to click on "Free Access", I've found two folio numbers that were illegible before, and shall carry on like that. It seems less slow, too.
And they do have some weird transcripts, don't they?
-
This hasn't encouraged me to go with Ancestry. I much prefer the layout and feel of FindMyPast.

Surely each library is paying a lot to Ancestry for the library edition, and if people like SilverGrowler continue to support their local library, the library will continue to pay Ancestry for their service.

I found on one occasion with Ancestry when I cancel a years subscription within a month of starting they cancel the whole year and fully refunded what I paided.

They have to let it run until the end of the subscription date as you've paid for that.

I found this after reading Ancestry faq's
Quote
"You may cancel a free trial anytime during the free trial period and incur no charge. For all initial purchases of subscriptions longer than one month, you may cancel during the first 30 days (calculated from the date of purchase plus the free trial period, if applicable) and receive a full refund. If the cancellation occurs after the first 30 days, you won’t be eligible for a refund. If you cancel your subscription but are not eligible for a refund, you’ll retain access to the subscription until it expires.
For renewals of subscriptions longer than one month, cancel within seven days of the renewal date to receive a full refund. No refund is available for monthly subscriptions.
For gift subscriptions, the refund period begins on the date of purchase."

That's good, glad that it worked.

There's something very odd in the 1841 census.
At top right of each right-hand page there's a large number that I take to be the folio number.
Very often at top left of the left-hand page is the mirror image of a number 1 fewer.
I don't know how that comes about, but frequently Ancestry gives the lower number in its summary. Can anyone tell me which is correct?
-
Yes: every other page changes the Folio number - so for instance, folio 45 covers pages 5 and 6, and then folio 46 covers pages 7 and 8. The mirror image is just "bleed through".
Assume that the right-hand page with the "large number" is the beginning of that particular folio number, and it covers 2 pages.
-
Thank you for the explanation, BumbleB.
What a way to run a railway, as my father would have said!
I suppose folio = foglio = feuille = sheet, but I feel a page number would have sufficed.
-
BumbleB, in your example, you say folio 45 covers pages 5 and 6, and then folio 46 covers pages 7 and 8. So, if folio 44 covers pages 3 and 4, and before that folio 43 covers pages 1 and 2, how do folios before 42 fit into it all?
Martin
-
I wasn't looking at anything in particular. It was an example :) :)
-
Martin,
I have found, for example, folio 51 page 18, or folio 23 page 4.
There's no rhyme or reason to it. Someone at the P.R.O. must have had a perverted sense of humour.
-
Have you looked at the image? Come on, give us the full details so that we can look for ourselves.
-
Martin,

There's no rhyme or reason to it. Someone at the P.R.O. must have had a perverted sense of humour.
It’s nothing to do with the PRO, it’s simply the way they decided to set up the census page numbering in the first place.
-
Well it's still perverse, sez I.
And those folio numbers appear to have been stamped on afterwards, not printed with the forms. That's presumably why they bleed through to the other side.
-
It is odd. I would expect perhaps a couple of lead-in pages, Folios 1 & 2, then Folio 3 for pages 1 & 2 proper then Folio 4 for 33 & 4 etc. But I'm a mathematician.
Martin
-

I've just had a look on Ancestry. Class: RG13; Piece: 3555. The first Folio is no. 101 which appears to be the enumerators details and schedule/route.
The next image Ancestry show is 104, page 1 of the census list, page 3 has the no 105 etc., etc
What was on Folio 102/3 I have no idea. possibly instructions for enumerator on doing his duties.
-
cracked it I think.
just looked at RG13/3552
Wigan - district 1
The enumerators page has the folio no. 2, the first list page 1 has 5, page 3 has 6 etc. etc. until the final page 43 has 26. then comes district 2
the enumerators page has 27, page 1 of the list has 30, page 3 has 31 etc. until the last page 49 has 54.
District 3 enumerators page has 55, page 1 of the list has 58, page 3 has 59 etc.
What I think this shows is that the folio numbers were added at the time all the district returns had been collated for that Parliamentary Borough.
The page numbers re-start with each district.
EDIT:- Ahhh! Then they go and partially ruin that idea when they get to District 8 it has the ref RG13/3553 and the renumbering starts again, maybe it is a second book for Wigan, which does have 51 Districts so they must have numerous books hence the piece no. change.
So the folio numbers refer to each leaf within each book which covers several districts and each book is given a piece number.
That is my supposition/theory.
-
I always look forward to ancsetry free weekends
They seem to come round on certain holidays. And I agree with a member. Why not give free dna. Like they do with there search engine / website.
Dorothy

And I agree with a member. Why not give free dna. Like they do with there search engine / website.

Probably as it would work out too expensive. The whole idea behind giving the free weekends is to entice people into subscribing to Ancestry, or FindMyPast when they do the same. However, the idea seems to have backfired, judging by the number of people on here and on other forums who say they just wait for the free weekends. Also there are now quite a few people who have actually cancelled their subscriptions and wait for the freebies.
I know I have thought about doing the latter, but I think I would miss it too much. It would though be nice to be offered an incentive eg after two or three years of a continuous subscription to be told they were giving me an extra month free.
I could understand it if once you'd had a free trial you couldn't then have another, but to allow free trials every time seems a bit short sighted to me. It would be interesting to know how many people do then join after such a weekend.
-

I was quite busy over Easter so not online much, but found the Canadian records useful for a couple of branches of the family, so I've taken out a worldwide sub for the first time. I've had other subs before, but not worldwide.
-
I do agree, about the "time after time" of being able to take advantage of the freebies - once, twice even is OK, but every time = NO, NO, NO. It just makes those of us who have taken the plunge, feel less inclined to help others. In my case, I no longer respond to requests at these times. Maybe I'm lucky in that OH and I have access to both FindMyPast and Ancestry. Each to their own :-*

I have access to both Ancestry and find my past. and my heritage.
but in a way whay would we need free dna each time like we can get on ancestry. when if you did have free dna you can only use it once. and ive heard it somewhere not sure where but apprently. how do you really know its your true reasults.
theres also something im wearie of. with alot of people who pretent to be what there not meaning fake sites your not sure if you get anything you pay for anyway.
im not critaziing anyone. just a thought. as you hear so many Hoax's.
