Title: Reason Distinguished Flying Cross was issued 1945 RAF
Post by: Joyner1 on Sunday 25 March 18 14:30 BST (UK)
Does anyone know where I can find out some further information on the reason a Distinguished Flying Cross was issued in 1945.  I was told it would have been mentioned in the Gazette but all I can find is an entry for the name but no reasons.  I am looking for George William Wray Waddington service number 53427 in the Royal Air Force.
George had a distinguished career later in life receiving a CBE, he is my friends father.
Waddington is the surname and he was born in 1921.
Any information gratefully received.

Malky, do you know whether the RAF records would give details of why the DFC was issued?  I have found the link to obtain service records and was wondering whether it was worth the family obtaining them, what sort of information will they get?

I would strongly suggest the family should apply for his records.  As well as the decorations listed already, he started his career in the ranks being commissioned from Flight Sergeant in 1943.  He also was awarded the Queens Commendation for Valuable Service in the Air in 1957 before appointed as OBE in 1962 - all in all a very fine career that his record will show in much greater detail.  It may not have a record of the citation but it should show what squadron he was with when it was awarded which might help further research.  When the DFC was gazetted he was with 432 (RCAF) Squadron but he does not appear in their list of awards so may have been with another squadron.  http://www.bombercommandmuseum.ca/squadron_432.html

Not the case - for the record - the records held by MOD date from 1920 and if the subject has been dead more than 25 years and you have a death certificate, anyone can apply and will receive their full record.

MaxD, that is very useful information, I have printed off the applications for his service records and will urge the family to obtain them. Thank you.
They have a wonderful collection of the medals and even his log books, it is fascinating.
