Hi I am new to rootschat but here goes
in my family tree I have Joseph Shepherd b 1726 in wymeswold, married to Ann Chamberlain b 1750,
It appears that they had a son Joseph b 1780 who married Sarah Cheatle b 1786
My problem is that the parents were born and died in Wymeswold, Leicestershire, but the son was born in Ibstock, Leicestershire, and all his descendants are from Ibstock
are these father and son, or is it a naming coincidence?

Hello and welcome!
There is a huge age gap between them and was Joseph really fathering children so old?
Could there be three Josephs, not two (Grandfather, father and son)?

....... who married Sarah Cheatle b 1786
If Joseph married Sarah CHEATLE in 1799 at Smisby then wouldn't this baptism in 1779 be more likely?

How do you know where he was born?

Well I have had to untangle errors in a tree I was working on after confusing two couples both with the same names and same ages in adjacent villages so confusion is quite possible. On the other hand I have also found people moving away for work then returning to their home village.

The headstone for Joseph and Sarah states that Joseph was aged 52 when he died in 1829. While ages are often not exact I also notice that they named a son John Buckley SHEPHERD. There was a marriage in 1756 at Newton Solney between a Thomas SHEPHERD and Ann BUCKLEY and a baptism for a Joseph SHEPHERD in 1776. Perhaps worth considering.

Actually it appears the marriage was at Church/West Broughton and he was from Newton Solney, she was from Broughton. I cannot see the originals so just going by the indexes.
Ann was a very young widow in 1756 so perhaps this is her first marriage as Ann SHEPHERD in 1755.
