Hi everyone,
You have been very helpful in the past I hope so again.
I am looking for the family of Thomas Crispin Phillips. His mother was Mary Crispin and Father John Phillips.
Thomas was born approx 1815 West Down Devon
His parents married 18/02/1811 at Bishops Nympton
I have not been able to sort out who the John Phillips was he was born approx 1789
I would be most appreciative if you could find this family for me

Hi
This looks like Thomas's christening
West Down 31 May 1815
Thomas Phillips s of John and Mary carpenter
Siblings Mary 28.9.1813,Anne 24.11.1816,Elizabeth 11.10.1818,John 17 Dec 1820,William 19.1.1823,George 24.1.1824,Henry 18.2.1827.
There are 3 John and Mary's,yours the carpenter,John the blacksmith and John the miller.
Yours looks to have died by 1841 so
John Phillips buried 2.3.1828 age 39 years would be born c 1789.
His Admin at the Crt in Barnstaple confirms he was a carpenter.(There is also a Death Duty document).
There is a baptism 28 Feb 1789 John Phillips base born son of Susanna Phillips.
Sister Mary 8.4.1786
Susanna seems to have married John Norman lab 26 Sep 1792 at West Down
wit James Symons and John Holmes.
Susanna Norman buried 13 Dec 1835 age 86 so born 1749
However the baptism I can see at West Down is 2 July 1738 d of John Phillips.
Which seems really early

Hi Ciderdrinker,
don't know why your email didn't show up in my inbox here, but , hey got it anyway.
I am trying to work out who is my John. Do you mean that he is the base born John? and that he is the John who married Mary Crispin in 1811.
If so what are the chances of finding who his father was?
looking forward to your reply

Hello Julie
Yes that is what I mean.
So John was born 1789 and married Mary Crispin in 1811.
The only hope of finding his father is if there is a bastardy order for his Dad to pay maintenance .
Or I suppose a DNA test but you'd have to have someone else to match the test to.
A Bastardy order is your best bet.
I'm not sure what survives for West Down but they should be in the catalogue for Devon Archives.

Hi Julie
Just curious if you got any further as I too am interested in following the John Phillips ( and possible Susanne Phillips ) line as parents of Thomas Crispin Phillips. I am also keen to know if you know any information about how and why Thomas Crispin Phillips and Matilda Tilt his future wife made it out to Australia
-
Hi
no unfortunately I have hit a dead end. The only reason for coming to Australia at the time they did was probably because of the gold rush in Victoria. I have yet to research that aspect.
Regards
Julie

Thanks Julie
I haven't been able to determine whether they met in Australia or England. Currently I am also trying to determine whether John Phillips is the illegit son of Susanne Phillips. The lack of obvious family history prior to this probably suggests he is.
Anyhow all good fun.

Thanks I have just found a Thomas Phillips who apparently arrived on a ship John ? looks like Burton which arrived in Sydney in 1844. However this Thomas Phillips was under hard labour in Victoria in 1847. So I am assuming he was a convict on the ship and then transferred from NSW to Victoria. His date of birth was written as 1817 which ties in with Thomas Crispin Phillips. Just currently cant find the ship of the same name arriving in Sydney.
The reference for this information is the Public record of Office of Victoria -

For anyone interested.

Mistranscribed as TILL.
Arrived in Melbourne per Blackwall, Dec. 1852.
TILL, Matilda, a shopwoman, born in Surrey, aged 33.
She was C of E and able to red and write. She was engaged to go to Mr and Mrs BROWN who lived at Prahran and her assignment was one year. She arrived with posting and was required to repay 23 pounds for her assistance.

The Thomas and wife Sophia Phillips who arrived 29 August 1840 were from Aylesbury in Buckinghamshire
-
The Church of England marriage of TILT and PHILLIPS took place at Christ Church St Kilda (Melbourne)
A suburb which almost adjoins Prahran.
