Title: CANNING in Tobermore and Dungiven, WILSON in Macknagh,
Post by: dcanner on Saturday 06 August 05 14:34 BST (UK)
Hello,
I've hit a brick wall in my research of Robert Canning, sexton of the Kilcronaghan parish church through much of the latter half of the 19th century.
His wife was Mary Wilson, daughter of Andrew Wilson of Macknagh in Maghera.
Canning's father was Henry of Dungiven.

Any tips would be most gratefully appreciated.

Hiya dcanner,

A belated welcome to RootsChat.

The directory is online at www.192.com

There would be no harm sending an email to the librarians at  Dungiven  (http://www.ni-libraries.net/app/Directory/LibraryDetail.asp?LocationID=134) and  Maghera.  (http://www.ni-libraries.net/app/Directory/LibraryDetail.asp?LocationID=63)

My great grandfather, Robert Canning and (http://)his wife Jane Phillips Canning migrated to Allegheny City (part of Pittsburgh) Pennsylvania in the 1860s. He was the son of the Clerk of the Kilgronighan(sp.) parish in Tobermore. I have a bible given to Robert ( either my gr grandfather orhis son Robert C. Canning) by one Mathilda Canning in 1861. It was from the inscription Tubbermore/Kilchro...) parish that I connect with their Tubbermore/Tobermore roots. Family stories indicate that his family were Church of Ireland prople and Jane's were Baptist. The marriage was not approved by Robert's family so they skipped town and landed in Allegheny City. Here they joined the Disciples of Christ(Campbellite) congregation that was sort of an American  hybrid of Presbyterian and Baptist traditions

Robert Canning was originally from Dungiven Parish, born around 1807 and died in or around Tobermore, Kilcronaghan parish, Co. Derry.   He may have resided in Maghera Parish as he is listed there in 1831 on the census.  Later Robert was a sexton in Kilcronaghan Parish Church, Tobermore, N. Ireland.

First wife was Mary Anne Steel.  They married 5 Jan 1827.
 1) Eliza Canning born 17 Dec 1843, christened 7 Jan 1844, died about 1926.  She married Robert Lynn (1834-1912) in Londonderry County.
2) Charles Canning christened 15 Oct 1842, same location.
James Canning   born                       1828
Samuel Canning born           20 Jan 1833
Henry Canning  born             8 Sept 1835     baptised  13 Sept 1835
Robert Canning  born           25 June 1838     baptised    08 July  1838    married Jane Phillips and emigrated to Allegheny City Pittsburg PA

He remarried in 30 July 1857 to Mary Wilson of Macknagh in Maghera and had six additional children:
Jane  4 Oct 1858
Mary Anne  28 Oct 1859
MARGARET,  born 8 Feb 1861, died 10 Jan 1937 in Philadelphia, PA.
William Charles 28 Apr 1862
Isabella  17 Jul 1863, also emigrated to PA.
Matilda  19 Feb 1865
All were born in Tobermore, Co. Derry.
Apparently Robert Canning lived to be 102 and was a deacon in the Church of Ireland for 46 years.
??another son called John Canning

Parents Names Robert Canning Parish Clerk Jackson Grey Public House Keeper

Does anyone know when Robert (the parish clerk) passed away?

This is just a possibility.  GRONI online has a death registered in Magherafelt Registration District for a Robert Canning who died on 7 May 1898, reported age 98.  To view the full record, including digitised image, costs £2.

Many thanks for the info, gaffy.

With an age of 98 and dying after 1887 it would seem to confirm that he isn't a son of Henry Cunning who died in 1890 then! Just thought that there might have been some recent link.

Once again many thanks!  :)

A very good suggestion for the death, as that is Robert. The witness was his daughter Mary Ann Waters/Walters/Watters who married in 1876. There is also a will for Robert at http://www.proni.gov.uk/index/search_the_archives/will_calendars.htm which mentions his wife Mary Wilson and grand-daughter Catherine.

Catherine Watters married Elaine's George Canning in 1902

The will also mentions his daughters Mary Ann (Watters), Jane and Matilda as beneficiaries if his wife predeceased him. Mary (nee Wilson) died 29 March 1904.
