Title: Charles Long Surrey Look up Request
Post by: Kev82 on Saturday 06 August 05 14:21 BST (UK)
I am researching my family tree on my mum's mum's side (The Longs) who came from surrey mainly Thames Ditton. I am looking for records of Charles Long who married Mary Ann (Prior) they married on 18/11/1844. Charles was born in Thames Ditton. His parents were James and Elizabeth Long and he was born around 1820. He had 6 children and the youngest son as also called Charles Long.

I have been unable to find any records of the first Charles I have checked the census back to 1861 and his wife is down as a widow. Please could someone try and look him up either in an earlier census or the records at the Surrey records office.

I would really appreciate any information because I have been stuck on this for months.

Cheers Kevin

Hi Kevin,
Welcome to Rootschat. :-\  ummm, your information is a bit dis-jointed, or it could be me ;)
I've interpreted this as,
James & Elizabeth LONG had Charles LONG, Thames Ditton about 1820.
Charles LONG married Mary Ann Prior 18/11/1844
On the 1861 census, Mary Ann (nee Prior) wife of Charles is widowed. You're asking for information about the first Charles, but I see only one.
Can you quote the sources of what you already have, it's of great help when trying to track down people.
Hope we can help you,

Jane

Hi Jane,
Sorry, I see what you mean I just read it back!. The information I have has come from birth, marriage and death certificates I have going back to about 1877. I have also used the online census seraches e.g ancestery.co.uk etc. The reason I said the first Charles Long is because the one I mentioned had a son called Charles Long born 1855 he then had a son called Charles Long and he then had a son called Charles Frederick Long (my grandads uncle).

The charles Long I have no info on is a mystery to me because I can not find any records any where. His parents names I got from sharing my family tree on Genes Reunited but I am not sure if the names are correct. On the 1855 Charles Long Marriage certificate his father is down as deceased but his occuaption is a cab proprietor. Any help would be greatly appreicated.

Regards

Kevin

Ok Kevin,
I'm still muddled but I'm not giving up on you ;D
Can you write the details down as I did with dates etc?  Then let us know what or who you need information on?
I'm confused as you are talking about an 1855 marriage for a Charles Long which can't be the Charles Long, son of James & Elizabeth, born 1820, as he married Mary Prior in 1844!

I'm going by what Jane deduced in her first post.

Here's hoping the following will give you something to work on!

1851 census, Thames Ditton

H0107/1604/73

Charles Long age 29 born Thames Ditton
Mary Ann Long age 27 b Thames Ditton
Ann Elizabeth Long age 5 b Thames Ditton
Julia Long age 1 b Thames Ditton

I feel the following may be related:
HO107/1604/76

Edward Long age 38 b Thames Ditton
Fanny Long age 36 b Thames Ditton
Edward Long age 14 b Thames Ditton
Charles Long age 12 b Thames Ditton
Elizabeth Long age 9 b Thames Ditton
James Long age 7 b Thames Ditton
William Long age 5 b Thames Ditton
Ann Long age 3 b Thames Ditton
Mary Ann age 1 b Thames Ditton

Charles Long buried 1858 Thames Ditton age 37

James Long buried 18 April 1830 age 47 Thames Ditton

James Long m Elizabeth Adams Long Ditton 28 July 1805 by banns both of this parish

Plenty of leads there! ;D

Hi, Thanks very much the information is really useful and has filled a lot of gaps. Would there be any records any where of what the Charles Long who died in 1858 died of because he died at such a young age would it be the local records office to Thames Ditton?

Regards

Kevin

Hi Kevin,
On the FreeBMD index there are two deaths recorded,
1. Charles William Long June quarter 1858 at Kingston (Thames Ditton comes under that district)  (2a 119)

2. Charles Long, December quarter 1858, Kingston (2a 126)

If you purchase the certificate it will tell you what the cause of death was.
FreeBMD will tell you how to purchase certificates,

Hi Jane,
Thank you very much for the information. I did check it out and was redirected to another web site to order certificates however it said on the website that they could only pull certficates from 1900 to 18 months ago. So I am a bit stuck really.

Thanks anyway

Kind Regards

Kevin
