Title: James A Wass, trying to date photo.
Post by: MANDY61 on Sunday 04 March 18 11:17 GMT (UK)
Hi,

This is the third time of trying to upload this photograph so I hope it hasn't repeated!

I'm trying to date the attached photo, I think it's of my great grandfather James Arthur Wass born in Ripon workhouse in 1886 but I'm not sure whether it's him or maybe his father who deserted the family before he was born. I have lots of older photos of my great grandfather but none as a child so nothing to say for sure if it is him. The photo would have been taken in Ripon I think, it is a postcard but there are no clues to say where it was taken or who took it.

It's the only one in my collection that 'looks' old, it may just be because it's dirty and has obviously been carried around a lot due to it's condition.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you.

He looks in his 20s or very very  early 30s to me. Could you put up a scan of one of the ones when he was older, please.

Hi, there isn't anything on the back of the photograph, it's just a typical postcard that has space for communication and 'address to be written here'.  There isn't any indication of where it was taken or by whom, no stamp or markings anywhere.

This is a later photo, pretty sure there's a similarity.

I would say it's highly probable that they are the same man.

Agree post WW1 & I would suggest late teens to early 20's.
You'll notice his trousers are narrow cut & finish at the ankle. This was a trend from the 1910's.
He looks in his 20's.

But these dates don't fit with an 1886 birth.  That's what I've been puzzling about   :-\

I've never gone down the road of dating a photo based on the age of the assumed person in it.

I think you suggested it in your previous post.  Think it's important in this case as the OP says he was born in 1886 and you're saying he's in his 20s and photo is post WW1

Added - I think he's one of those people who looks younger than he is (like me!! ) and he's most likely about 32-34 (1918-20)

Hi I'm just starting off with my Mother's side of the family.
Mum born Ripon 1939 was a Handshaw but her Mum was Wass from over Thirsk way I think.
Never traced family before so don't really know where to start. I do know a few family relatives with the Wass name and some great aunties that were born a Wass.
