Hi All,
I am appealing to all Manchester City supporters as well as Football Historians out there.
I am researching my mother-in-law's family and she believes there is a family tale that a Samuel Painter was once a Director at Manchester City FC (Circa 1900 - 1920).
It may be a load of rubbish but i am hoping that either way someone could please confirm this?

Have you contacted the Football Club as they may have records

One of our members, Duck, is very knowledgeable on football teams (esp. in Lancashire). It may be worth sending him a personal message:

I haven't as of yet. I've found from experience that the bigger the team the less likely they are to reply or give you any information.
I will try Duck and see where I go from there

I'm sure he'll help. One of my relatives was Billy Meredith and he found lots of info for me on his days at City and Utd.
(I had the Chirk info!)

Billy Meredith WOW, that's some relative. He was a legend in his day. As a football fan I've been unfortunate not to find any relatives who played the game. In comparison my family tree is quite boring (no scandals or nothing).
I have messaged Duck. Hopefully he'll be able to unearth something for me

In John Harding's biography of Billy Meredith there are two photographs of the directors in 1904 when the club won the FA Cup. Painter is not among them.
According to the National Archives the club's records are at

Thank you. I shall make enquiries. If he wasn't a director at Man City, I wonder if he was at a different club (if at all). Other than United there wouldn't be too many other clubs knocking around then from that area.

Nearly all the local clubs were well establish by 1920. City, despite their billions, are still a community club at heart and I'd be surprised if they weren't supportive of your enquiry.

I have emailed them and will hopefully receive a reply soon.
