Hello. I am looking for a second opinion on the names listed on the paperwork attached. I believe I have the correct names from another baptism of a half sibling from Honora's first marriage.
The children were all baptised St. Thomas Portsmouth. It does look like it says father of John Marlow was Thomas Marlow (which matches current data). The hand writing of the parish looks like it says Thomas but I never did find a marriage before in the indexes.
If anyone could let me know what they think in their opinion the document states?

It's late (that's my excuse!) but I can't see Marlow in there anywhere! I can see what looks like Spencer... ???
-
Thank you for your reply.
It is part of the Royal Marines school hospital admission report from National Archives for Thomas Marlow son of John Marlow and Honora/Annora.
Which part did you think said Spencer? Could that be the person certifying the marriage? I have never found a marriage record for the couple mentioned yet, unsure what date it says on this apart from 1821?
More documents here, one of them seems to be writing asking for the document I attached previously.

It appears in the first line ‘I certify that John Marlow.....’

Oh, crumbs. ::)
I read "I certify that the...". Oops.
I'm too tired. To me it looks like "In the Parish Church of St hmm" and that the Curate's name is Thomas Hamsheet.
I'm no use to anyone tonight. I'd better get some sleep..! :o

I've just got this so far:
I certify that John Marlow of ? S Spencer Ma?, and Robert* Burdon of ....
*add- see it as Honora now ::)

Thank you. I thought it was St. Thomas too but was not sure as no record on the indexes. It could be on separate Royal Marines register.
On the other document it seems to show a child from previous marriage 14 years old being named Michael Riordan so that must be the surname listed on this? I was trying to read if it matches to a baptism I found for a Michael Riordan to a Honora Lyons and Cornellius Riordan.

It’s very difficult :o

I couldn’t guarantee that any of this was correct ::)
-
I wonder if you could find Thomas Hamstreet, the Curate. If that is his name, of course :)

Thank you. Could it be Riordan or Reardon? That would match other records?

Where did the baptism of Michael Riordan take place?
-
The most likely baptism I found for Michael Riordan was in Soho Square, Westminster, Middlesex. Birth date 14 Jan 1816 Baptism date 21 Jan 1816
There is also a Honora Riorden (that is the transcribed spelling? unsure why) in 1813.
The age listed on the other documents matched the date of baptism, so it is likely the baptism I found online and posted previously is the same one mentioned on Thomas Marlow admission report?
-
On a census Honora was listed as born Cork, Ireland if that helps.
-
Is the parish church St Ninian
:-\
-
I thought that too, Gadget but I can’t work much of it out.
-
There's an island near Clonmel that's called Moors Island but can't see any sign of a Church called St Ninian - there's one in Derry :-\
-
Also one in Wigtownshire and Isle of Man.
-
Is it headed <somewhere beginning with M>, Cork?
-
H.M.S. Spencer is the name of his ship.
-
H.M.S. Spencer is the name of his ship.
Of course it is :)
-
Do you think it could be Cove - Cork as in Cobh present day.
-
Cove is an old spelling of Cobh = Cork
Still some queries, but ...
I certify that John Marlow of H. M. S.
Spencer, Marine, and Honora Riordan of Cove
in the Union of Clonmell Widow, were Married
in the Parish Church of s(ai)d union by Banns
this 9 day of July 1821 by me
Thomas (?)amstreet
Curate of said Union
Present
Henry (?)
Wm Brown
Cove
rec(eive)d 7 Decr 1833(?)
I think the surname of the 1st witness Henry begins with the same letter as the surname of the curate Thomas. But not sure what it is.
ADDED - Sorry, heywood, we coincided ;)
-
I was thinking of Clonmel, Tipperary but Cobh is in the civil parish of Clonmel, Cork so it looks promising.
Also thanks Bookbox for ‘union’ and ‘widow’ :)
-
I wonder if the heading is ... Mage Cert. No 59 (for Marriage Certificate)?
-
Thanks to Bookbox for directing me to this thread from the one about Honora Marlow.
I've already had a go at this, not very successfully. Handwriting is dreadful.
I, like Heywood assumed it was Clonmel, Tipperary. (Clonmel had a permanent military presence from 1805.)
Started off badly as i couldn't read the words at top of page. Then got a bit better:
"I certify that John Marlow of ____ ____ ____ ____ and Hanna (?) (or Nora?) Riordan of ____ ___ the town (?) of Clonmell _____ ______ married in the Parish Church of s'd (?) town (?) by Banns this 9 (?) day of _______ (August?) by me (?)
Henry H(?) anigheet/anisheet (?)
Curate of ______ ______
Present: Henry (?) _______
Wm (?) ______
C______
Rec'd 7th Oct (?) or Dec (?)/ 18??."
I'll now read transcription by Bookbox.
-
Well I got month of wedding wrong and missed year entirely.
I had doubts about "town" but it didn't look like anything else and I assumed the wedding was in the town of Clonmel, that being one of the few words of which I was certain.
Names of ships on which John Marlow served are on the school application document (link from other thread). He was on one whose name began with S from July 1820.
Edit. I've looked again at the list of ships John Marlow on which John Marlow served. He was a Corporal on HMS Spencer from July 1820. He was a Sergeant on another ship from August 1823.
-
I tried to decipher surname of 2nd witness. I came up with Anson or Moran. Not confident about either. Final letter agrees with "Brown" from Bookbox.
-
Thank you very much everyone.
-
Also one in Wigtownshire and Isle of Man.
Thank you. Will try and find certificate.
-
Also one in Wigtownshire and Isle of Man.
Nothing on Scotland People website or Familysearch Isle of Man page.
-
I think I was referring to where there were churches dedicated to St Ninian. We later found that it was Union not Ninian.
I've had another look in available online Cork records but I couldn't see a suitable one - but aren't there only a few Cork records available online?
-
Thank you for clarifying.
