Post by: harveyh on Saturday 17 February 18 19:25 GMT (UK)
Hi

Seeking information on a marriage between Herbert Bower and Charlotte Wells Circa 1853 in Acomb Yorkshire.  Would anyone know how to find which church this would have been please. :)

Rather than force someone else to look it up from the (not-provided) reference, put the details in yourself.

Marriage took place 09 November 1853,both stating that they were of full age and bachelor and spinster respectively. Herbert Bower lists his occupation as Mason and his residence as Sheffield. Charlotte's residence is Acomb.

Fathers: John (could be Bower, but the writing is not that clear, farmer) and John Wells, butcher.

Vicar is Isaac (Spiner?) and witnesses are John Wells and Margaret (Nell / Neil?)

Thankyou to you all , you are all very kind to put yourselves out to help me.  I am a new researcher and haven't yet discovered where I can find all this information. But now I am another step closer and with some new websites to help.

Pauline J : Thank you for the link , I wasn't aware of this website.

Hi , Thank you that is a very kind offer, would you know if the old parish registers are still on site or would they be kept in archives? We are currently caravaning near York so we could do a detour if necessary.  Thank you

I think that you'll find that the parish registers will be housed at the Borthwick Institute (part of the University of York) in York.  Very helpful staff.

We are not forced to do look ups we chose to do them if we have the time and resources.
People are not always aware of the resources that are out there and need a little guidance.

I think you will find that they are as Bumble B said at the Bothwick Institute archive which is at the University of York library on the Heslington West campus. Tel 01904. 321166
You could check to make sure they or copies are not held at the church by ringing the vicar:
Rev Peter Vivash.  Tel 01904 336827

You could also order the marriage certificate from the GRO using either name
Reference on FreeBMD

Charlotte Wells
Marriages Dec 1853, York, 9b, 3
Or
Robert Bower
Marriages Dec 1853, York, 9b, 3

The image for the marriage is available via FindMyPast - just check your local library, if you don't have access yourself.  AND copies of the parish register are available to view at The Borthwick.

9 November 1853 - St Stephen, Acomb
Herbert Bower - full age, Mason of Sheffield - father:  John Bower, farmer
Charlotte Wells, full age of Acomb - father:  John Wells, Butcher

Witnesses:  John and Margret Wells.

Both signed.

Added:  the image definitely shows Herbert Bower and that is how he signed the register, whilst the GRO shows Robert  ;D
