Title: Help with finding grandad.
Post by: rea1 on Friday 16 February 18 16:02 GMT (UK)
I have been trying without success to trace what happened to my maternal grandfather......my mum never spoke about her dad. I sent for his and my grandmas marriage certificate and a lady on here kindly found a piece in a newspaper about him stealing some ham from his employer, other than that I can't find his death certificate or any other trace of him. His name was Richard Barry Born 1877, fathers name Thomas, married my grandma Mary Jane Dalby 26thDec 1913 in St Mary's Church Bradford.

There are numerous possible births for Richard Barrys born about 1877ish - none in Bradford area.
When and where was he last heard of?
Do you know when and where Mary died - was she a widow then?

Thanks for replies, all I know about him is what's on his marriage certificate to grandma. She died in Leeds on the12th May 1958 when I was 5, and it says she was a widow. On my mums birth certificate on 17th 0ct 1919 he is named as father and their living in Leeds.

There is more info about him on the other thread!  He was a warehouseman, was at home on 1939 register, but away in war years, etc.

The other post indicates he was not with the family in 1939.  Last mention of him was 1922

I've just got my grandmas death certificate out and it says at her death she was "A Wife/Widow " so it's sounds like she-or my mum and aunt didn't know if he was dead or a live !.

Could he be Irish? There is a Richard Barry, son of Thomas Barry and Margaret Barry Brown born in 1879 at Edendarif, Down, Ireland on Ancestry. I can't find him later though (still looking).

You may have to be patient but he could be with the family in the 1921 census  :)

It looks as though he was  ;) according to the other thread

A few more details to add to the picture

Electoral roll for Arnley 1920, 21 & 22;
5 Wallace Street
Barry, Mary Jane
Barry, Richard

After 1922 it seems Mary Jane is on her own.

Absent Voters list 1918 West Leeds
5 Wallace Street
Barry, Richard - 2nd South Staffs. Regt.

There only appears to be one medal card for a Richard Barry in the South Staffs regiment.  Private 41846 awarded Victory & British medals.

That’s from your other thread posted by Sc00p. :)

Have you got the names of the marriage witnesses?

Assuming he stayed in England/Wales, then possible deaths would be -

JAS 1933 St Olave - Richard Barry age 58
JAS 1935 Dartford - Richard Barry age 60
JFM 1974 Croydon - Richard Barry age 94 dob 1st Ap 1876
JAS 1940 Poplar - Richard Barry age 73
JFM 1926 Cardiff - Richard M Barry age 49
JFM 1930 Cardiff - Richard Barry age 52
OND 1942 Tonbridge - Richard Barry age 64
JFM 1958 Wallasey - Richard H Barry age 80
AMJ 1945 Mythyr Tydfil - Richard J Barry age 67

Can we rule any of those out?

ADDED - we can rule out the 1958 Wallasey I think. He left a will, he is Richard Hubert Barry, and executor is widow Margaret.

Not sure if R. Barry 41846 is your man but....

"Weekly Casualty List - 31 Dec 1918 P26
Released Prisoners of war from Germany, arrived in England.....

SOUTH STAFFORDSHIRE REGIMENT....

Barry 41846 R. (Warrington)"

I briefly looked in the ICRC Prisoners of war records but couldn't find an obvious match.

Thanks Sc00p I'll try look in to this more, but it seems it's looking like I'll never find out what happened to him.

As I said earlier he may appear on the 1921 census with the family, at least you will then know a bit more about him.
