I have found someone in 1939 Register, living in an institution, address simply given as Coulsdon and Purley. She is a patient, formerly lady's maid. Approx 180 female patients listed, no staff listed.
Any suggestions as to where this would be?

Can you tell us who you are talking about as it could help us with our reply ;)

Could be Cane Hill hospital in Coulsdon.

I tried scrolling back to the beginning of the property but that did not help

Here's her death...

I'd go with Cane Hill, which was a large psychiatric hospital in Coulsdon. If you look at the list of people they all have "formerly" before their occupations even some of the younger ones.
Shortly before WW2 the Hospital had 857 male and 1,290 female patients

It wasn't either of the main Croydon workhouses as they were in Croydon itself - Queens Road (later became a geriatric hospital) and Mayday ( now Croydon University Hospital).

Thanks for all your replies.
I did have her death registration. I see that Surrey Mid Eastern includes Coulsdon, she may have died in hospital.
I'll see if I can find any men or other women in Coulsdon and Purley, only 180 patients in this 'block', should be a lot more. The address and staff may be in other 'blocks'.
Thanks again, Margaret

There was also Netherne - another Mental Hospital tha came under Coulsdon & Purley

I also have someone in the institution with the letters CMMG and suspected it was Netherne Asylum. I had the same problem locating the first page, so I tried a search with surname A* and kept trying till I landed in CMMG.
CMMG turns out to be Cane Hill Hospital - another asylum just a couple of miles north from Netherne. It evidently had a capacity of 2,400 patients. It looks like the 1939 register submissions might have been done in blocks of 300 individuals, and males would have been in separate blocks from females.
The first person on the CMMG page was Henry George Abbott born 1868.
I haven't found any proper definition of the codes so this is a working theory.
