Hi,
Alexander and Clementina McDougall had a son Daniel McDougall also known as Donald, b. 1822 Inverness. Daniel married Charlotte McLean in Bathurst, Eastern Cape South Africa and died 10 March 1843 Grant's Valley, Kenton-on-Sea, Eastern Cape, South Africa.
To help a friend keen to know more about her Scottish rooots I would appreciate any information about Alexander and Clementina McDougall as we have no other information about them.
There may also be a Ballachullish connection as a family member corresponded with someone in that area ca 1020s.
Thank you
Babso

Hi Babso
Was Daniel's religion Roman Catholic?
There is a possible christening entry for him in the RC registers Fort William, The Immaculate Conception, Argyll:
MacDougal DONALD, parents ALEXR MACDOUGAL/CLEMENTINA MACTAOIS (McTavish/mcTavis)
born 3/8/1821, bapt. 14/8/1821
Some other children to this couple baptised at the same church include:
Clementina born 4/4/1820, bapt. 10/4/182
Ann born 13/11/1823, bapt. 20/11/1823

Possible 1841 census entry:
Alex Mcdougall 45 Tailor
Clementina Mcdougall 45
Jane Mcdougall 20
Una Mcdougall 4
John Mcdougall 2
Ewen Mcdougall 15 ap. tailor
Catherine Irvine 25
Clementina Irvine 1
Address: Fort Wm Low Street 1st Division, Kilmallie Inverness
The 1841 census is limited in terms of info. Relatonships within the household were not normally included and for those over 15, their ages were normally rounded down to the nearest 5 years.
Daniel not showing but by this time likely he was working away from home?

Thank you ev, luckily the south African family seems to be well documented.
Monica thank you so much for all the census info. Family in South Africa seem to be bChurch of England or Anglican as we call them here.
Such quick responses are much appreciated, thanks again.

Was thrilled to find this thread as I have been researching Alexander and Clementins McDougall as well. Thank you for this information, it is a big help. Btw my grandmother was Gertrude Amy McDougall, daughter of William, a son of Daniel McDougall. The Sourh African descendants are well documented but Daniel’s origins were always a mystery to many in the family. He was supposed to have been shipwrecked at Kariegs river mouth.

Hi Susan
Welcome to RootsChat :)
If you want to trace Alexander and Clementina further, if they died in Scotland (which seems likely), their death certs should include the names of their parents, if know to the informant to their deaths. Original images are available to view on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk It is pay to view but costs are reasonable.
