Births Sep quarter 1888  WOODWARD    Alfred James King's Norton 6c   436

That is all you need to purchase his birth certificate. Cheapest way is via the GRO which will then tell you his parents, actual date of birth, etc etc https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/
Then you can look for them all on the 1891, 1901 and 1911 census.

Passenger ship list to the USA then the US census 1940, 1930, 1920 etc

Looks like this might be his US draft registration WW2 https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HY-6SN3-88F?i=2473&cc=1861144 which give his date of birth as 20 Jul 1888 and residence as Needham, Norfolk, Massachusetts

Maybe him 1940 census https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3QS7-89M1-3KHP?i=19&cc=2000219

In the 1953 Boston city directory, there is this:

Woodward, Alf. J., marine spec. agt.  Aetna Ins. Co., home Needham

That matches his employer in the WWII draft registration card.

Social Security Death Index has an Alfred Woodward, born 24 Nov 1888, died 1 Aug 1974 in Middleton, MA.  This is in Essex Co.  You could contact the County Clerk's for a death certificate.

That one has a different birth date from the WWII draft registration card, and the Massachusetts death index gives his middle initial as C.  He appears to be this man, who is apparently not the right Alfred  - https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/107942302

Yep, you're right, Shelly.  Wrong guy.  I did see an Alfred who died 1955 in Florida.  Maybe he was a snowbird?

Since no likely candidates seem to be showing up in the Massachusetts death index, it seems like a possibility that he died in another state.  The Florida one fits his middle name, so that is a good find.  https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:VVS2-67N

Also, the time frame seems to make sense, since he showed up in the 1953 directory and not thereafter, so maybe he retired to Florida then.  If he died from 1962 forward, I would have expected him to show up on the Social Security death index.  Since he doesn't seem to be in there, an earlier death is logical too.

It appears he was a snowbird who did eventually retire to Florida.
