Free BMD has Ernest William B Eveleigh born dec quarter 1887

does the B   indicate Brodie which would tie into the 39 register ?

According to GRO Index "B" stood for Blackmore. No mother's maiden name recorded.

In 1891 Ernest recorded living with grandparents,  William and Emma Eveleigh,  at Lower Mackham, Hemyock. (In Wellington, Somerset, registration district)

His service record doesn't say much. As MaxD said he didn't serve overseas.
First attested in the 3/1 D.Y. & transferred to the 2/1.
Made L/Cpl. & had no. 3259.
On the formation of the Labour Corps he was posted to the 449 Ag. Coy. no. 546814.
Gives NOK as mother Emma Eveleigh (Mrs.) of Rawridge, Upottery.
An engine driver by trade & probably used in that capacity.

You lot are fantastic.  I think I can now build Ernest's life story.  Only thing is that his next of kin is down as Emma Eveleigh who died 1935 and his mother when his mother (I'm sure of now) was Emily who died 1891 and he'd been living with his grandmother Emma since 1891.

Thank you for all your help.  Can lay him to rest now.
