I am looking for the mother of Ernest Eveleigh born 1888 possibly Stockland Devon or around that area.
The 1891 census (3) he's living with his grandparents William Joseph Eveleigh and Emma (nee Goff)
The 1901 census (13) he's still living with his grandparents (as above)
The 1911 census (23) he's living as a boarder with Alice Mary (nee Eveleigh) and John Harris at Mill Cottage Upottery. His grandmother Emma is also at that address.
William and Emma Eveleigh had 4 daughters - Alice Mary, Jane, Tamsin and Emily Jane and three of them were married - except Emily Jane. Could she be Ernest's mother - I have census info for her up to 1881 but no further. I cannot find a death date for her either.
Would be grateful for any help - thank you.

He must be the son of one of the four daughters of William Joseph Eveleigh and Emma. I suppose it would be sensible to check all four as some children born out of wedlock sometimes were brought up by their aunts/grandparents. One of my grandmother's children (born out of wedlock) was brought up by one of her sisters and she brought up one of theirs ! A funny old world back then.
Thank you SGF28 - that sounds right - funny that he attended the school twice (school holidays perhaps)
The WW1 information is worth looking at too. Thank you.

With your help I have been able to find out more about Ernest Eveleigh. I think the WW1 info is correct. He married an Agnes Wyatt (Upottery Devon) in 1920 and he died 1965 (Honiton registers). I am almost 99% sure his mother was Emily Eveleigh who died 1891 which is probably why he was living with his grandparents on the 1891, 1901 census and with his aunt Alice Mary Harris (nee Eveleigh) on the 1911 census. However as I have no evidence I am trying to locate the Hemyock parish register to see if he was baptised there. No luck so far but thank you for your assistance.

That is good news you have found out more about I'm, have you thought about checking Find My Past 1939 register, if he is listed you may get an exact date of birth for him and his family
The only other way of course is to purchase a certificate

There is a death for Emily Jane Eveleigh, Mar qtr 1891 St Thomas aged 24 d of b circa 1867, is this your Emily?
Louisa Maud
PS There is a will for Emily Jane Eveleigh who died March 1891 stating her father was John a carpenter of Ebford near Topsham so perhaps this is not your Emily

Thank you MaxD - that pretty well answers my questions. I have obviously been barking up the wrong tree regarding his mother Emily who I thought died 1891. At least now I have all I need to know about Ernest.

Delighted!

One more thing - Ernest put his mother as next of kin as Emma Eveleigh of Rawridge, Honiton Devon.
Well this is odd - his grandmother with whom he lived since 1891 (when I found an Emily Eveleigh who died in 1891) was called Emma Eveleigh (nee Goff) and living in 1911 with her daughter Alice Mary Harris (nee Eveleigh) at Rawridge, nr Upottery, Honiton, Devon. Emma (his grandmother) died 1935.
Could it be possible that although he was her grandson, she was mother to him and she would have been his nearest next of kin ? Or am I wanting this to be especially as I've spent so much time on this individual !!!!
-
I must admit I thought this earlier when the name Emma came up, I believe he had been brought up by his grandmother as a son, how nice was that?, I would be happy with that explanation if it were me if there were no other records available to convince me otherwise

Thanks Louisa, I was hoping I could accept it - I think I will make notes of all comments and then call it 'case closed'

Did you get his marriage cert, you might look at witnesses to see if Emma was one,
