Can anybody tell me what would show on a birth certificate for an un-named (ie. 'Curran, Female') child?
Is there any chance the entry would have been amended later with the actual forename?

Just what you expect Female or Male and then everything else you would normally get on a birth certificate. Most but not all Female/Male births have in the same quarter a corresponding death certificate, so you need to check deaths as well, as the birth and death were often registered at the same time. Some of these children did however go onto to live and it just seems the parents hadn't made up their minds about the name of the child, though there may be a corresponding baptism which gives the name. I have as late as 1907 a Male birth registered, who only died within the last 5 years. His birth was never re-registered. However, most of the births registered I know of where the children lived are in the early years of civil registration.

Sigh... Just what I feared...
I couldn't find a matching death so am hoping for this one to be my UFO Gggran. Only thing I know about her is the deceased father she mentioned at her marriage. Well, guess I'll have to take the chance...
Thanks very much for clearing this up for me, Valda.

Have you matched this possible birth registration with censuses? If you have then all that is left is to purchase the certificate.
(She couldn't be registered in another name, first or surname - born before the marriage)?
What are the details of great granny?

:D Thanks a lot for your interest. I have already posted 41 and 51 request to no avail. I'm wondering how honest she was about her dad's name on her marriage day!
No address given on marriage certificate, no in-laws ever with the family from 1861 onwards, no other births for her maiden name in the area she states as her birthplace, nothing on IGI... I'll just have a go at this birth cert and otherwise I'll wait for an indexed 1851/41 to do more digging.
Doesn't matter too much, I have plenty others to trace for now and am very happy to try and help others too.
Thanks again.

I have this very situation -- the only birth record I have found that fits is "male"
I emailed GRO & was told if I send the fee & application for the birth certificate & explain that I only want the certificate if the other details (ie parent(s) names) are correct --
They would refrain from sending the certificate if it did not match & reimburse me.
