Title: 254 Munton Road - 1891 and 1901
Post by: joboy on Friday 05 August 05 02:34 BST (UK)
I am not sure whether Munton Road came under Walworth or Newington but it is located parallel to,and south of, New Kent Road and near the 'Elephant and Castle'.
I am in need of knowing the families who may have been at this address in both 1891 and 1901.

You can search on the address at the official 1901 site to find the borough/parish details.
You would also need a house number. Come back with details when you have had a look there.

This is what came up on the 1901 site;
254 Munton Rd  London Newington St Johns Walworth Division Of Newington    Southwark  St Johns.
So it looks like Newington eh?

1891 Munson Road does not appear.

Next likely candidates are Minson Rd Rg12/207 fol 9-11
Muston Road Rg12/183 fol 132-133.

Who is is that you hope to find?

1891 census RG12 353 folio 108
254 Munton Road Newington
Frank Rose Head Married 27 Coachman born Hackney
Elizabeth Rose Wife 27 born Clapham

This family would appear to be in Clapham on the 1901 census.

Perhaps if you just give details of the family you are hoping to find in the area, a search can be done.

Valda

The families I seek are;
WATERSON - HIDER and TWITCHIN.
The WATERSON's (Joseph and Mary) disappeared without trace about 1901 and their two daughters Josephine aged 7 and Gladys aged 1 were adopted by the TWITCHIN family sometime after this and in all subsequent censuses etc they appear with the TWITCHIN surname.
I can 'home in' on this as there was another daughter Alice Waterson, who died at birth. Her address was 254 Munton Road. This was 1900.

Since Joseph and Mary are not showing on censuses (have you found Joseph on any?) as Waterson and the children are not with them in 1901, is there another name they might be using?

Thanks Valda ........... it's the WATERSON children no doubt ......... I wonder what happened to their parents?.
Nothing in free BMD.
Interesting thing is that George TWITCHIN (an ancestor of mine) was a carpenter and so was Joseph WATERSON the father of Josephine and Gladys ........ workmates perhaps? .......... they lived a long way apart though !!

The children may have gone into the care of Southwark and been fostered out and then adopted (no process for adoption until 1927) so then a more informal situation. You would have to look in the poor law records for Southwark at the London Metropolitan Archives.

I've got people in Munton Road, Newington in 1878, number 128, but it's also listed as (can't read the certificate properly...) The Palalmate(?) does that mean anything to anyone? Not sure it really helps, though.

Hi,

I spent 12 years living next door to 254 Munton road, which was my friends fathers flat.

254 was on the top floor of the large old victorian tennament block and was a 1 bedroom, kitchen and living area layout with no bathroom or running hot water.

The block was located in Walworth, which is in Southwark and the old parish of Newington.

254 was at the rear of the block and looked directly over Victory place school.

The block was demolished in 1972 to make way for a green area of the new Heygate council estate.

I cannot find any photos at the moment, but if I do, will post them on this site.

Regards,

Steve
