Title: deciphering names in 1661 Scottish will part 2
Post by: ksyw2x on Saturday 13 January 18 22:17 GMT (UK)
This is again regarding the will of Christiane Wyllie, 1661, Kilmarnock Ayrshire.

1. "Item be the good wyfe of [  ]". The first letter matches with other C's in the document.
2. "Item be [  ] calderwood in peacockbank"

Thanks,
Katherine

I think the second is:  Neill calderwood

The first is something like:  Clonhars

The s is a bit different to other final s in the five extracts, but still looks more like s than anything else.

Thank you! I thought that the second one was Neill just because nothing else fit with the "iell". I considered "Heiw" but there is a clear Hew on the page and the H looks nothing like our likely N. I guess that the N is just a really sloppy N.

Take a look at the image attached to this recent thread:

The second last word of the first line is Nicholas.  The capital has the same form as your N.

It's a typical mid-seventeenth century form, so not really "sloppy" as such.
