Title: Making Family Tree available online..
Post by: tickncheck on Wednesday 10 January 18 21:39 GMT (UK)
I am looking for advice on making my family tree available one line. We created it on ancestry and legacy, but, now find the cost of maintaining an ancestry subscription prohibitive.  We would like to make it freely available and at little or no cost to us (this does seem to be the sticking point) and presumably once we die , the tree will fall by the wayside as there will be no one to maintain the cost. So I would really appreciate some ideas and advice.

Many thanks

Robin

I have my tree on TribalPages.  I pay a small subscription for some extra features (about 20€ a year) but you can also have a completely free tree on the site with an unlimited number of names.

I would definitely look at TribalPages. It is very easy to use.

I use tribal pages too.

Anyone can access it if you give them the account details (password etc).

I find it very good for trees I make for others because they can add anything they want to or amend any errors I make, and vice versa.  :)

FamilySearch is free and lets you upload a tree.

Tribalpages. You can make your tree open to view by anyone.

Problem with Tribalpages it only allows 500 names for free, then you pay.

I have about 3200 names and up to 9 generations. Presumably if you stop paying (dead) they delete the tree.

I have started a tree on tribal pages, up to over 1700 names so far, free.
I find it easy to use; other family members can access it (handy as they are in England and I am in Australia) and other interested people can contact me if they want to view it.

It does say that there is a 500 name limit but I have several free trees, all with more than 500 names

I wasn't aware of the 500 name limit. I think I have have fewer than that (to date) on all trees but I must check to see if it has allowed me to go over their limit.  :)

I have my trees on Ancestry - but I haven't paid a subscription for a few years! ::)

I am still able to view, edit and update my trees.
So, there's no real need to move your trees, unless you want to?

As far as I know, the Sub is for access to records.

The Tree remains available without a Sub.

I'm surprised at the comments about the 500 name limit on TribalPages.
Just looking at their website, I am seeing:

FREE          PREMIUM                             DELUXE
                 $3.00 a month,                   $4.00 a month,
                 billed annually                      billed annually
Number of Names
Unlimited     Unlimited                            Unlimited

I read this;

Build your Family Tree Website
Once you have signed up, TribalPages creates empty Family Tree website for you. You can now either enter the names of your relatives online or import the family tree from your computer.

There is 500 name and 50 photo limit to the number of names you can have on a free website. See pricing for more details.

but if you go to the pricing page it is unlimited for a free site.  I think that it is mixed up with the word limit for individual notes which is 500 words per individual.

Yes, TribalPages definitely allows unlimited numbers of individuals, even on the free version  :)
