Trying to find what happened to a brother and half brother of my great grandfather, both born in Johnstone.
John McKechnie born c1817, Ireland, died 4 February 1861, Abbey Poor House, Paisley
married to
Rose Stewart born c1825, Ireland, died 22 October 1875, Johnstone
They had a family of three......
John McKechnie (1855 – 1907) (my Great Grandfather)
Sarah McKechnie (1857 – 1925)
Alexander McKechnie (1860 – ?)
and a half brother
Bernard Gillan McKechnie or Stewart (1863 - ?)
Rose McKechnie is recorded in the 1861 Census as a Lodging House Keeper then in the 1871 Census as a Widow and with a Lodger named John Gillan, aged 35, a Labourer from Ireland.
I have details of all except Alexander and Bernard after the 1871 Census...anyone any ideas?

Have you looked for marriages/deaths on Scotlands People?
Have you looked for Bernard under Gillan? Have you viewed his birth cert on SP and is a father shown?
-
Yes, think I’ve tried every permutation, can only guess he moved in with his grandmother and perhaps back to Ireland, perhaps emigrated too along with his older brother Alexander.

If he moved to Ireland you may be able to find him on the Irish 1901/1911 which is free here

If they emigrated - the US censuses are available on Family Search
