Close to WW1 so around 1910-14 I would suggest.

JHC was born 1883. The chap on the right  looks about 25-27 so perhaps  photo taken little earlier than Jim's suggestion.

Hi there. Do you know JHC was born 1883 from a public search or do you possible have more information that may be of interest to me?

Births June Qtr 1883 Coulson,  Joseph Harrington,  Lanchester,  10a 356 https://www.freebmd.org.uk/
He was baptised 6th June 1883 in the Wesleyan Methodist Church, Shotley-Bridge, Durham, father Edward Thomas Coulson
From the free search of the 1911 census it could be the young boy is his son Joseph Coulson born 1906

I obtained his year of birth from Free BMD. Registered Lanchester June quarter 1883.
From GRO Index:- Mother's maiden name  Bowman.
Family Search 1891 (possible). Edward Coulson (38), Annie coulson (31), Margt A Coulson (9), Jo's H Coulson (8), living  Lymington Terrace, Brandon, Durham.
Unable to find Coulson/Bowman marriage

I have found record of a birth registered in the name of Edward Thomas Coulson,  Chester Le Street, June 1853, which matches census records. No mother's maiden name is recorded on GRO Index so presumably unmarried.

This is where conjecture takes over!  The names Edward Thomas C White and Annie Bowman appear on same page of marriage register Chester Le Street, June 1877. Granted not proof that tihey married each other , but is it possible that the mother of ETC married a Mr White, the groom adopted his step father's name but retained Coulson as a middle name? I can find no record for birth of ETCW.

Hi Careylynne.

Some more speculation!

From Free BMD:- The names Robert White and Ann Coulson appear on same page Durham December quarter 1873. Not proof they married each other.
From Family Search 1881:' Robert White (46) and wife Anne (41) living in Chester Le Street with son, Robert, age 5, born C. L .S.
From Free BMD:- Robert White, birth registered Chester L S  December quarter 1875.
From GRO Index:- Mother's maiden name Coulson

So it looks as if the couple did marry which adds weight to the speculation I made in my previous post.

From census:- Anne Coulson/ White born Pittington circa 1840
Family Search 1841 records 3 Anne Coulsons born 1839/40 in Co Durham, but Free BMD shows only two (including variant).  Ann Coulson, registered Durham Dec 1839 - no Mother's maiden name.

I have gleaned all these hypothetical possibilities from free-to-view sites.  Further detailed research and scrutiny of original sources is required to substantiate my findings as accurate. This could incur some financial outlay.

The foĺlowing baptism on Free Reg:- Ann Coulson, born  30 Oct., baptised  8 Dec 1839, at Gateshead Fell, Durham. Daughter of Joseph and Catherine of Low Fell. Father a Collier. Not too convinced that this relevant.

It would appear that this Ann married James Cleasby in  1859 (Free BMD and 1861 census)

More speculation!

In 1841 Ann Coulson, aged 1, living in household of Ann Coulson( age 55), Newrick (age 20) and Ellen(age 20) -adult ages rounded down to nearest 5 years. Living South Hetton, The long Rows, Easington  ( approx 3 miles from Pittington, birth place/child hood home of Ann Coulson/White). Relationships not given but seems possible Newrick and Ellen brother and sister. Ann daughter of Ellen?

From Family Search:- Ellen Coulson/ James Smith married  28 Dec 1844, Kelloe, Durham.

From Family Search:- 1851 James and Ellen Smith living Durham with daughter, Ann, aged 11, born Pittington.
From Free reg:- Newrick Coulson baptised  4 Feb 1816. Son of John Coulson and Ann Mowbray.

I accept there are a  number of gaps but I do think it provides a reasonably cohesive narrative linking  John and Ann( Mowbray ) Coulson to Joseph Herrinngton Coulson, but as I said previously, subject to closer scrutiny.  Could be one long string of coincidences!

Hi CareyLynne,

You say the man on the right, Joseph Harrington Coulson, is your great grandfather. Well his sister, Emily Sophia Coulson, is my great grandmother! So Annie Bowman on the left is our great great grandmother. I would love to know what else you have found about the family tree, I have been doing my own research and found out a lot about this part of the family tree. I also have photos I would love to share, and if you have any other from that part of the family that would be amazing. Thanks! Rebecca

The voices in MY head were saying, "The young one must a boy because he is wearing trousers and a cap and he is indicative of a boy going to a Private School not wearing it down a coal mine. Cap and clothing of all those in the photograph = money!
