Is anyone researching the Harrison family of Salford? I am looking for information on J.T. Harrison who was Chairman of the Park's Committee in 1938.
Many thanks.

If you Google " Previous mayors - Salford City Council" it lists John Harrison 1938-39. Could this be your man?
Free BMD has two deaths registered in Salford, 1940-60 in the name of John T Harrison. June 1945, aged 75, Sept 1947, aged 68.
From Find a Will. John Thomas Harrison of Wellington Street West, Salford. Husband of Agnes Maud. 1945
John Thomas Harrison of West Clowes Street, Salford. Widow Bertha. 1947.

It might to useful to look for options for John on the 1939 Register

That's really helpful brentor boy and amazingly quick!
I'm sure he will be the one who became Mayor. I'm hoping to trace a descendant to invite them to an event. I'll see how much further I can get.
Kay which 1939 register are you thinking of?
Thanks,
Elaine.

Sorry - the 1939 Register on FindMyPast which was prepared in Sept 1939 of England and Wales residents pre WW2 https://search.findmypast.com/search-world-Records/1939-register

This may help when you check the 1939 Register, as ARP responsibilities are usually noted on the right hand side:
Salford Council to-day appointed the Mayor (Councillor J. T. Harrison) as Controller of A.R.P. in time of emergency.
(Manchester Evening News 5 April 1939)

Thanks Shaun. Looks like he was a busy man!

If you are looking for a living relative of J T Harrison, have you considered making an appeal via the Letters page of the local Salford/ Manchester press?
Is the reason for your quest sufficiently newsworthy to engage the interest of local radio?
It is quite possible that some family members still live locally.
Can anyone with access to the 1939 register confirm if either the deaths noted in #2 are relevant ? This should not contravene conditions of use.
The more you know of JTH, the more you can bulk out your story.

A quick search on Newspapers.com reveals that the death of Alderman J T Harrison, former Mayor of Salford, was reported in the Guardian of 4 July 1947. His widow Bertha's death was reported on 11 September 1948.
Per the probate calendar, Bertha's executor was John Edward Harrison, butcher.

John Edward Harrison. Dec 1911. Salford. (Mmn Henson).
Seems to be only child.
In 1939 living with his parents?

Thanks ShaunJ and brentor boy. With this information I am now clear which J.T. Harrison is the man I am looking for. From the 1939 Register, he is the one born in 1878 living with his wife Bertha.
From 1911 census he is living in Zacariah Salford, aged 32 employer, a butcher, with his wife Bertha 31 and daughter Nancy Harrison aged 1 and Servant Dora Hutchinson aged 17.
Looks as though his son, John Edward was born in 1911, making him 28 in 1939.
He married Bertha Henson in Hulme in 1906, the daughter of butcher and he was the son of a butcher.
Shaun you have 'A quick search on Newspapers.com reveals that the death of Alderman J T Harrison, former Mayor of Salford, was reported in the Guardian of 4 July 1947, but the probate record has him as dying on 22 July 1947 in West Clowes Street?
I'm currently investigating records which may be held by Salford Council.
brentorboy your idea about newspapers and radios is a good one.

Good luck in your further research. Glad to be of help.

Yes I know. Clearly one of those sources is wrong. You would need to check the image of the Guardian page in question. I don't have a sub to Newspapers.com but I think they offer a 7-day free trial. I'm attaching the snippet that I saw.
