Hi,
Does anyone here have access to 1960s London Street directories, or are they available digitally, or from ancestry or anything?
Cheers!
-
Are you being specific as to the part of London you wish to view?
eg http://maps.nls.uk/view/101455066 "West" London (although this one 20 years earlier )

Good question, Ray. Thanks!
Being frightfully specific, I'm looking for St. Mary's Terrace on Paddington Green. That's 'Little Venice' in W2.

So, here?

What do you need?
Fotos?

That's the one!
What I'm looking for is a surname. Around 1964 Mike O'Neill, then of the pop group Nero and the Gladiators, was living at one of the addresses on St. Mary's Terrace. On the floor above was living a tuba player named Rodney, now deceased, and his mother, also deceased.
I'm keen to find out Rodney's surname as he's an early member of a band I'm writing a history of.
Hence why I was hoping a street directory might help!

The London electoral registers including Paddington North for 1963 which includes the flats on St Mary's Terrace are online at Ancestry.
Mike/Michael O'Neill isn't listed there but there are other possible addresses for people with the same name.
I've asked the question though on a closed Marylebone/Paddington fb group.

Whats the name of the band?
-
It looks as though Rodney's surname might be Slade?
I managed to copy a bit of info. before my comp had a problem...
" Nero And The Gladiators ... Nero (Mike O'Neill) had previously played keyboards as a member of The Cabin Boys, the ... He and bassist Rod 'Boots' Slade formed The Gladiators originally with Laurie Jay on ... singer and guitarist Dave Lowery made the crossover to the mainstream with their"
I had to close the tab but I'm sure if you 'google' part of the above it will bring up the page as I'm unable to open anymore tabs at the moment...sorry!

Don't think he was Rod "Boots" Slade as he played the bass. The only band of that era that had a tubar were Bonzo Dog who had Rodney "Rhino" Desborough Slater.
-
I wouldn't know as it's before my time :P but I do know many artists are multi-instrumentalists i.e. at this moment I wouldn't rule him out.
Another link I found although not much to gain but depending on what's sought it may be worthy?

Maybe not Rodney Slater, he was still alive and kicking in May of this year.
-
Thanks for the input, guys!
Funny you should mention Rod Slater of the Bonzos. He was in the same flat and actually told me about this guy.
Rod, the tuba player, wasn't a professional, but was a member of the St. Martin's Jazz Band in 1961 alongside Rod Slater. Rod Slater became a Bonzo, and other Rod didn't.
By 1964 or so, Mr. Slater had moved into St. Mary's Terrace where he found the other Rod on the floor below. He can't remember his surname, but I thought that having the address - and names of both Slater and O'Neill as other residents - might help me find my man.
As I'm writing a huge history on the Bonzos' earliest years, knowing Rod the tubist's surname would be a useful addition. Hence the searching!
Hope this is useful. You lot have been :)

And in the avoidance of doubt, Rod Slater definitely is alive and well. He released his debut album this Summer and is about to tour it!

There are several Rodney Slater's in the electoral roll 1962-65 paddington and 2 Michael O'Neill. All on Anc***ry but I'm not subscribed.
-
Thanks, Solidrock. Looks like that would be just the ticket for finding the errant Rodney II.
Sadly, I don't have a subscription this year, either.

I can't reproduce that search result. There are none showing in Paddington for me. Just one in Hackney and one in Mymms North
