Title: Photo restoration and dating please Roberts/Thomas or Williams
Post by: teulucooke on Sunday 19 November 17 19:50 GMT (UK)
This photo is of either my great grandparents, John Roberts 1852-1930 and Ann Thomas 1852-1895, or my great great grandparents, John Roberts 1819-1889 and Mary Williams 1809-1870. Any suggestions, possibly from their clothes, as to which couple it could be?
Thank you

1870's & probably early to mid decade.
Too young to be anyone born 1809-1820 but have to say they look too old for a couple in their early 20's.

You have been online since I restored your photo and no response from you  :-\...I did my best but the resolution wasn't great and a lot of the finer detail has been lost. Maybe someone else will do a better job on it.

Carol, there has to be a certain amount of guesswork with a badly damaged image like this one, so everybody will produce a different restore. For instance, I can't make up my mind whether Mary is wearing a hat or not, I think I might see a bit of a brim. I have done one without a hat and one with.

Tuelucooke,

Would you kindly post your image again after scanning it at a higher resolution, please. Restorers encourage all posters to send in picture files of as close to the 500kb limit as possible. (Yours was only 39kb.)

Two reasons: When restorers zoom in to a low resolution image to do repairs, no details appear (pixels become as big as eyeballs, that is, they start looking like Lego characters). Following on from this, the better we can see their faces the better we would be better able to estimate their ages for you.

No guarantees with a better scan, sometimes there is too much damage/fading in the original - but it allows restorers to give it their best shot.

Jim, Carol and Pat have done fantastic jobs, considering how little they would have been able to see.

Hope this advice helps.

Cheers, Peter.

Thank you for your responses, they look really good. I realise that the photo is in a very poor condition and that not much could be done with the female, however, the man's image has been made clear enough for me to compare it with a photo of my great grandfather and to confirm that it is not him. Perhaps they are not my great great grandparents either, I will have to do some more research. I will attempt to scan it with a higher resolution but my computer skills are limited and I may not succeed.
