I am trying to find out where my gt grandfather was born and also where he is buried. His name was James Slack and he was born around 1824 in, I think, either Norbury or Knotbury. I also think he had a brother call Abraham who was born around 1822. James died on the 13th January 1898 in Sutton Macclesfield Cheshire, but there are no records of his burial in that area. I have done some searches and Longnor near Leek keeps being mentioned. On the 1841/51 census it states that he was born in Norbury or (K) Notbury, and on subsequent census' it says born Wildborclough, and as Knotbury is next to Wildborclough it seems quite probable that Staffs is my missing link. Until I find where he is either buried or was born and of course who were his parents, I cannot get any further with my tree. Any Help would be appreciated.

There's a baptism at St Bartholomew, Longnor (about 11 miles from Wildboarclough):
James Slack baptised 27 Apr 1823
son of William and Ann of Edgeside
Father's occupation: Cordwainer
Cati

Was he a single man or married?
Possibly married to Margaret Kemp in later census - if so the marriage in 1854 will confirm the name of his father.
-
Thank you . The Longnor connection looks promising, I will look into it. Also it states on his marriage cert to Margaret Kemp, that his father was also called James, but it does not say whether he was still alive on that date. I am beginning to think there are other first names involved other than James. I also think James had a younger brother called Abraham, and they worked together in Wildborclough.

Right so you know who his father was - what occupation is listed for him on the marriage?
Who were the witnesses?

There are already many threads on this topic, including a pretty recent one posted and replied to at length on the Cheshire board (sorry can’t do links at the moment). This included all the details on his marriage certificate.
Because of the multiple threads there is a huge amount of duplicated work going on.

I think this is the Cheshire thread.

Thanks. :) In reply #2 of that thread I have linked to a few of the others on the same topic.

I have taken a little time this morning to go through Chestnut's topic on James Slack.

I didn't manage to read all the replies but I did notice a topic I posted on 688937 suggesting that Bereavemnent Services was contacted.
No reply posted so I've just rung them myself.
Their burial records on their computer system links the 11 cemeteries they manage across Cheshire.
They have no specific record for James Slack aged 76 who died 13 Feb 1898 so the inference I make is that he is buried in a churchyard or he is buried in the cemetery but has been incorrectly recorded.
As his wife Margaret was buried in Sutton (churchyard not specified) in 1904 my suggestion would be that he is more likely to be there as well as that is where he died according to previous topics. If not there then very close by. His name might be mistranscribed so looking at the actual register images around the date of death will be necessary.
At that time, 1898, people were usually buried closest to home as they didn't have the money for repatriation or the need to do so. He had most probably spent too many years in Sutton to be sent anywhere else.
I'm not Cheshire focused so I don't know what is searchable online or available from the FHS.
I'm suggesting a very 'big' ask, but if someone in the area or who has area knowledge can do a detailed look-up rather than a cursory glance as the indexes and then let us know specifically what parishes and churchyards has been checked I would be grateful.

Info here about Sutton churchyard, they say their records are not online, but contact them and they will do look ups.I think it very likely that he is buried there ,as he lived and died in Sutton, and his wife is buried there.

Let's hope Chestnut actually reads your post Dawn ;D
I am still pondering as to why Chestnut can't move on with his/her family history until they find where he's buried. I have loads of my ancestors whom I've had to put burials on the back burner for now.Especially my London ones.

Hi Carol
Thanks for doing that.
I have sent chestnut a pm about your reply.

As I put on the other thread, there appear to be a number of possible locations in Sutton for James' burial.

The OP said that his wife was buried in Sutton Churchyard, googling that and reading the website about the village seems to suggest that St James's was the main church at the time.
It may well be a case of writing to each one of them though ::)

I've had a very quick look at one or two of the other threads on this subject as listed by dawnsh, and in one of them Chestnut says that she has a copy of the inquest report on his death. This may have already been covered, but I wonder whether the local newspapers have been searched, as they might offer a venue for the burial. :-\ :-\
Added: nothing in those available via FindMyPast.

chestnut has now established that James is, after all, buried in the churchyard at Sutton
