Can anybody help me find the premarriage surname for Phoebe Aston born 1831 and married to John Aston as shown in the 1871 Census with a daughter Elizabeth Aston aged 10. There are no details for the 1861 Census and the 1851 Census shows John and Phoebe Aston with a son Richard Aston aged 1 as lodgers in the Cheshire family in Wolverhampton. I cannot find any trace of Phoebe before this and would like to trace her family back before she married John Aston because Elizabeth Aston was the mother of my grandfather Thomas Bacon.

Have you searched for the children's birth registrations to see what mother's maiden name was recorded?
You haven't said what birthplaces are stated for the children in the censuses.

Shows an Elizabeth Aston b 1859, Wolverhampton with mmn Cheshire which may be significant. There are several in the same area though so will have another look.
The indexes are free to search and useful. You have to register though.

As a follow-up so we aren't repeating each other's searches, GRO also shows a Caroline Aston, born 3 quarter of 1854 in Wolverhampton with a mother's maiden name of Cheshire.
It's starting to look like they were lodging with her relatives!

Phoebes Father Richard is a Trunkmaker.

For some reason Richard c 1808/9 Wolverhampton is down as Charles Cheshire 1861 Census.
His Baptism is on FreeREG;

A Tree has Hannah Hartshorns Parents as Francis/Ruth but I think they were more likely William/Phebe.

Hi. I would like to thank everyone that has responded to my post re: Phoebe Aston and all the information and help that I have received. Rootschat is a fantastic website. I guessed that Richard Aston had died when very young. This has now been confirmed for me. I also found the marriage of Phoebe Hartshorn Cheshire, aged 17 to John Aston, aged 30 in Wolverhampton in 1848. This confused me since John Aston was born in 1829 which would have made his age 19 not 30. Maybe he changed his age for the Census's records. Was it ok for girls of 17 to get married in 1848? I also didn't understand the name Hartshorn after Phoebes name but this also has been explained now.

The 1848 Marriage is on Familysearch with John as age 30. But FreeREG has transcribed him as age 20 which fits with his age on Census.
As I dont have access to a image of the actual Marriage I cant look at it.
So we need a Baptism for John with a Father THOMAS as per M/C.
I am sure this is him in 1841 in Wolverhampton, not with Parents though;
