I am looking for the marriage of a John Wise Merritt. I have been given a date of 3rd November 1835 to an Ann Caroline Elston in St Leonards Shoreditch but the person concerned cannot confirm where they got this information from so I am reluctant to use it. I've searched and searched but cannot find anything for this. On the census her name appears as Caroline again have searched with this option and variations of Merritt and cannot find anything. Any help appreciated.

Is this the couple who are in Shoreditch in 1841 with children Thomas age 4 and Emma age 1 :-\

On the 1851 for John and Caroline in Shoreditch they have a child Eliza Merritt b. 1850.
Her birth record shows - MMN as Elston :)
However cannot find a marriage for John and Caroline ???

Yes this is the family. I am being particularly thick today but I cannot find the birth of Eliza giving MMN as Elston either can someone please put me out of my misery where is this record. You would have though after 20 years of doing this I wouldn't have a problem, maybe I have just been staring too long at it today.

I've just looked through the St. Leonard's, Shoreditch, marriages for that time period.
No John Wise Merritt. But on 3rd November 1835 there was a Thomas Merritt marrying a Charlotte Lace. Maybe the person with the tree got confused with their Merritts.

Just linking 1851 census for information

Thank you all did not realise the GRO would now search with a mothers maiden name for births for before 1912 it's been a while since I used it.

Thank you yes this is a possibility hence why I want to find proof for myself.

If the ages are correct on the 1851 census, they may both have been 16-ish when they started having children.
Maybe they couldn't get parental permission to marry.
