Dear all,I am trying to find the antecedants of William Slyfield Ball christened 17/april 1808 in Little Sodbury parents John Ball and Joyce Slyfield.
There was a marriage in Chipping Sodbury 7/april 1806 between John Ball(of Horton) and Joyce Slyfield.
There was a John Ball b.Horton ~1776(parents Giles Ball and Deborah).Giles/Deborah had another child Isaac b.24/may/1772
The only Deborah born Horton I can find is Deborah Hulins. The parents of Deborah Hulins were Isaac and Abigail.
There was another Giles Ball b.8/nov/1741 in Horton (parents Giles Ball and Ann).
That is as far as I have got.Has anyone found possible marriages (in Gloucestershire) for Giles and Deborah(Mulins?) and Giles and Ann?Any feedback would be much appreciated..ivorglyn

There is a tree on Ancestry which gives the marriage of
Giles BALL to Ann HUNTER 9 October 1726 at Westonbirt, Gloucestershire
(haven't found this one yet!) as there appears to be 'missing' years on Ancestry
---
There does appear (on Ancestry to be quite a number of BALL marriages at Westonbirt - including: Gyles BALL - 7 October 1680 - Westonbirt) -
---
The earliest child of Giles & Deborah BALL at Horton, Gloucestershire, was William christened 21 September 1766.

Gloucestershire Marriage marriage pre 1800 : has come up 'trumps'
By searching for marriages (just by residence i.e.: HORTON) have found
Husband's surname: (just a dash)
Forename: Giles?
Husb Place: Horton
Married at : Little Sodbury
Wife: ULAMS? (sometimes Gloucestershire Dialect doesn't sound the "H" - hence 'ouse' for House)
Forename: Deborah
Date: 22 July 1765
---
In previous reply: first child christened at Horton, was William in 1766
----
On the CD
There is a Thomas HOWLIN of Wapley who married at Little Sodbury : Mary SIMMONDS of Horton, 2 April 1705.

Dear Capetown,Many thanks for your replies.I found the marriage of Giles Ball and Ann Hunter in 1726 in Weston birt(which is ~6 miles from Horton). Was Ann Hunter born in Weston Birt?kind regards ivorglyn

?
Will have a look...
On the Horton baptisms/marriages
Isaac HULINS married Mary POWELL 23 November 1725 - and can see a baptism of Hannah in 1737 parents: Isaac & Mary - so assume the marriage to Deborah was after this date?
I've just been to Westonbirt Arboretum to see the Autumn leaves!
-
As Tetbury is just up the road from Westonbirt:
On Ancestry
Baptism at Tetbury : 21 January 1697
Ann HUNTER: father, George (+ various other siblings)
-
Dear capetown,Again many thanks
I had found the Tetbury birth for Ann Hunter which looks more likely than the other records. As for the Giles Ball marriage record..which marriage do you have the record for?
-
Not sure what Giles marriage you are referring to - hopefully I've attached the 1765 marriage at Little Sodbury.
By looking at just the page scanned - it highlights the problems people face when trying to find their Ancestors marriages, when the male surname - has been difficult to read.
-
Dear Capetown,I found a christening of a Deborah Hulins in Horton 14/july 1845 with parents Isaac and Abigail.Have you a record of marriage for Isaac Hulins and Abigail in Gloucestershire?
The next problem is trying to find the Giles Ball who married Ann(e) Hunter in 1726 Westonbirt.I found a Giles Ball b.Avening in 1718/1719 on familysearch but I must find a Giles borne before 1710.
I use findmypast and searching their records gave a Giles b.1688 Sherborne but no other Giles..
kind regards ivorglyn

I've had another look at the Horton Register on Ancestry
On Page 74 of 83 (Year 1737)
just at the bottom of this page and very small, it says, Abigail daughter of Isaac Jnr & Abigial (Ancestry has transcribed Jnr as JANE) Abigail for? Infant was buried Jan 9th.
Abigail HULINS christened at Horton: 2 January 1737, parents Isaac & Abigail
Just above, there is a piece of paper covering the baptisms etc - but this states
June 1740
This is to certify whom it may concern Giles BALL and Ann Tyscick? are lawfully married according to writes ? and ceremonials of the Church.
---
The year above the 'piece of paper' is 1734
If the original records are looked at - and the paper 'lifted' this may yield the info you want - as the previous page is a few years earlier.
----
This particular book has baptisms/marriages/burials 'not in sequence'
On Page 52 -
Isaac HULINS & Mary POWELL of Berekely were married by banns Nov 23rd 1724 (was this Isaac Jnr's first wife?)
Two Mary HULINS burials at Horton
Mary HULINS: 4 February 1724
Mary HULINS : 12 January 1729
(although and Issac & Mary HULINS had a son, Thomas christened 17 July 1734)
Gone from page 52 for a few years - no sign of Isaac marrying Agigail in Horton
--
Issac Hulins Snr of Chipping Sodbury - buried 22 March 1742
Esther Hulins of Chipping Sodbury - buried 8 January 1742
----
Just found
On Family Search there is a baptism at Little Sodbury: 4 January 1735
Susanna HEWLINS, parents: Isaac & Abigail HEWLINS
---
? as Abigail is not too common a name
Abygell STEPHENS christened at Tetbury, 28 April 1715, father Henry

Men in Armour for Gloucestershire 1608 (on the net)
AVENING/TETBURY
Edward BALLE, Weaver, A40 (age around 40)
meanest stature : which means he was fit for a pyoner or of little other use.
had a very quick look at baptisms at Avening - father Edward, so far
Aylles BALL - March 1599 -
James BALL - October 1595
the christian name Edward comes up in later baptisms

Dear Capetown,On familysearch there was a Richard Ball b.~1659 with parents Giles And Alice Haines but this Richard supposedly married Margaret Webb.
Francis Ball married Jane Clark in 1662 Avening and they had a son Richard(b.1664 8/jan).
Having checked all other available evidence I feel that the Richard who married Mary Carpenter was the son of Francis and Jane Clark...again many thanks for your invaluable help..ivorglyn
