Title: Bartholomew Downie
Post by: Wendy Downie on Friday 03 November 17 09:47 GMT (UK)
Can anyone help with Bartholomew Downie, Irish shoemaker, moved to Glasgow approx 1850. Seems to have disappeared after 1851 scottish census. Have found his wife, Mary Young, and children, Catherine, Richard and Matthew in 1861 census in same area of Glasgow. Bartholomew and eldest child John are missing, could they be travelling?

Scottish PO Directories

You could try checking the Glasgow directory around the period you are interested in.

So he's moved here after the Famine, the Irish folk were badly hit by the cholera epidemic which swept the east end of the city post-famine!

Skoosh.

His wife is listed as "Married" in the 1861 census and we can find no death record

Hi, can't see any sign of Bartholomew . I wonder if  this could be his son John.

John Downie  married Margaret Martin 1865 Hutchesontown Glasgow SP index

Bartolommew  b. 1866 Abbey Paisley.  D 1866 Abbey Paisley

John b. 21mar 1868 Blythswood  Glasgow
William b 8 Jan 1870 Blythswood Glasgow
Matthew b 13 mar 1872 Blythswood Glasgow
George b 28 Aug 1874 Hutchesontown Glasgow
The 1865 marriage cert would confirm John's parents names and if they were still alive.

Also saw this possible death for Margaret, Margaret Downie other name Martin  86 yrs 1931 Kelvin
Glasgow.

A tree on Ancestry has him born 1815 in Dublin, and presumed died before 1865 (so perhaps declared deceased on a marriage certificate (son John's)?)

Hi, Thankyou, sent us off down another route and found marriage cert stating Bartholomew as deceased, now wondering if he succumbed to Cholera between 1861/65. Also found son John in 1861 census in "Boys house of Refuge" in Duke St Glasgow

Hi Wendy, wonder if a look at the Poor Relief records would turn up anything.

Hi Val, doubtful of Poor relief records as wife Mary working as bookbinder in 1861 census. Have found son John in 'Boys house of refuge' in 1861 census, could father Bartholomew have been a partner in crime and be in prison? Don't know where to look for that...on the brighter side he could have fallen victim to epidemic and be in hospital, not listed as deceased until 1865

Wendy. I've just noticed your post on Bartholomew Downie.
In my tree I have Elizabeth Downie born about 1871 in the east end of Glasgow, probably Calton or around the High Street. Her parents were Thomas Downie born about 1835 and Mary Flynn born about 1836 , both in Ireland. Elizabeth married Bartholomew Collins and one of their children was called Bartholomew, born 1905 in Cumberland Street in the Gorbals in Glasgow. Is there a connection to you in this?
