Title: two places at once 1901 census
Post by: nursey1 on Saturday 28 October 17 19:48 BST (UK)
can anyone help me on this please. re. Robert John Westworth born 1861 Carlisle. occupation Dentist.
two things are puzzling me.
1) 1901 census ( folio 47 piece 3457 page 19) he is recorded at Walton Prison, Liverpool as a prisoner,
occupation is Dentist. says under 'if working' column 'At home' says he has own means.
however he is also shown on same ,1901, census as residing at 168 Fountains Road, Liverpool, all his details match, dob, occupation, wife and children are all correct!!!
so what does 'at home ' mean and how is he in two places at the same time!
driving me mad, any help or suggestions would be most welcome, thanks

I am not having any luck finding what you have posted. The nearest I can get is the 1891 census. Do you want to double check what you have posted ?

I believe that the details on the prison record are related to occupation and status prior to being in prison.

The family seems to be split up in 1901

It depends when he was imprisoned. As the census forms were distributed in the week before the census day, it could have been filled in at anytime assuming who would be in the house at midnight on the Sunday. Therefore you sometimes get people enumerated twice, at their usual home, and elsewhere. Also his wife could have filled in the schedule incorrectly, misunderstanding the instructions.

Thanks for your help . I was thinking along the same lines as you Stan, any thoughts on what the ‘ at home’ comment would be?
Just wondering how I can find out what he was in psison for.

"At home" means he ran his dental practice from home.

Thank you for clarifying what ‘at home’ means, I can stop thinking about it now!

He is listed as a Surgeon Dentist in Gore’s directory in 1900 in Fountains Road.

This is what is stated on the first page of the prison enumerators book. I can see no report in the newspapers about his crime.

Do you have the census reference for 1901 where you found him in Fountains Road?

I wonder if that’s perhaps the 1891 census.

1901 Zela is a boarder with the youngest son and the 2 other boys are in an industrial school in the Midlands.

1911 index shows Zela with daughter Margaret but no sign of Robert.

He advertises in the Wigan Observer and District Advertiser - Wednesday 15 August 1894, at 1, Rowbottom Square, Wigan.

He is listed in the Dentist’s Register in the Liverpool area from 1885 to 1935 at 5 yearly intervals so whatever he did, it didn’t seem to stop him practising.

Thanks again, I can only manage a screen shot of the census for 1901 Fountains Road address, which shows him with his wife and family.
Regards him still practicing as a Dentist, my first thought when I found him on Walton Prison census return was that he was there in his capacity as a Dentist, but then see that he is listed as a prisoner!
